RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL
OF THE CITY OF SANTA ANA
HONORING MRS. WESTON WALKER
WHEREAS,

WHEREAS,
WHEREAS,
it is the desire and intent of the City Council
of the City of Santa Ana to recognize individuals
who have significantly improved the quality of
life for the citizens of Santa Ana; and
Mrs. Weston Walker is well known and highly
esteemed by her admirers and appreciators in
Santa Ana, as well as the whole of Southern
California; and
Mrs. Weston Walker is a graduate of Santa Ana
elementary and secondary schools, as well as
Santa Ana College; and
Mrs. Weston Walker began her recorded community
efforts in 1948 by founding the Orange County
District of "California Garden Clubs, Incorporated",
serving as a member of the State board that year,
and later serving as President statewide, and
editor of the organization's magazine for two years;
and
in 1950 Mrs. Weston Walker founded the "Orange
County Herb Society"; and
that same year Mrs. Weston Walker founded the
"Santa Ana Junior Gardeners Club"; and
in 1955 Mrs. Weston Walker succeeded in having the
City of Santa Ana adopt the Chinese Hibiscus as
the official City flower, Santa Ana thus being the
first city in Orange County to adopt a city flower;
and
the following year Mrs. Weston Walker succeeded
again by encouraging the City of Santa Ana to adopt
an official City tree, the Blue Flowering Jacaranda;
and
Mrs. Weston Walker served as Chairperson for the
Orange County Memorial Garden, a living memorial
to the former Santa Ana Army Air Base; and
Mrs. Weston Walker succeeded in convincing the City
of Santa Ana to designate itself in 1964 as a bird
sanctuary, being the first city of the eleven now
designated in the County to do so; and
Mrs. Weston Walker was named 1965 "Woman of the
Year" by "The California Garden Clubs, Incorporated";
and
in 1967 Mrs. Weston Walker organized and founded
LISA ("Let's Improve Santa Ana") as a program to
improve the visual and social quality of life in
Santa Ana; and
Mrs. Weston Walker served as Civic Beautification
Chairperson for the California Bicentennial Commit-
tee of Orange County; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Weston Walker instituted a citywide "Arbor
Day" tree planting program in Santa Ana in 1969; and
WHEREAS,
Mrs. Weston Walker greatly assisted in establishing
the old County of Orange Courthouse as a California
State historical landmark in Santa Ana, in 1970; and
WHEREAS,
Mrs. Weston Walker also was of significant assistance
in establishing the City of Santa Ana's Birch Park
as a designated California Point of Historical
Interest; and
WHEREAS,
Mrs. Weston Walker was and is a driving force in the
preservation of the Howe-Waffle House as part of
Santa Ana's Heritage Plaza; and
WHEREAS,
Mrs. Weston Walker has been honored for her dedica-
tion to civic beautification and historical preserva-
tion by two Santa Ana Mayors, the Orange County Board
of Supervisors, the former Santa Ana Globe Newspaper,
Santa Ana Chamber of Commerce, the Santa Ana Parent
Teachers Association Council, the California Garden
Club, the California Recreation Society, the Sea and
Sage Audubon Society, the Orange County Historical
Society, the Orange County Chapter of the American
Institute of Architects, the Orange County Clean-up
and Beautification Committee, the Santa Ana Girl
Scouts, and the Golden City Awards Committee, and
others;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that Mrs. Weston Walker, after
over thirty years of continuous dedicated volunteer
community service to the City of Santa Ana in civic
beautification, conservation, historical preservation,
community activism, and civic generosity, is to be
extolled, lauded, applauded, commended and praised
for her dedication to the City of Santa Ana and its
citizens, by the unanimous vote of the City Council
of the City of Santa Ana.
ADOPTED this 5th day of February, 1979, by the following vote:
