HomeMy WebLinkAbout85-102REBOLUTION NO. 85- 10Z A RE~OLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA ANA OPPOSING THE F~3]~{AL PROPOSAL TO E~TABLISH INCREASED 0PPSHORE 0IL DRILLING ALONG THE (RANGE COUNTY COASTLINE WH~P~EAS, the residents of Santa Aha are blessed with proximity within miles of the beautiibl, unscarred Orange County coastline; and WHEREAS, the Orange County coastal area has been subject to a moratorium on oil drilling which hss been renewed annu.~ly since 1982; and WHEqFAS, as a result of this moratorium, the environmental balance along the Orange County shore is relatively stable at the present time; end WN~°~EAS, the United States Department of the Interior has proposed an agreement whereby 54 square miles of formerly unprotected ocean floor off the coast of the Orange County communities of Huntington Beach and Newport Beach would be offered for lease to oil ccmpanies by the federal government; and WHEREAS, this proposed agreement is strongly opposed by the Orange County coastal communities which would be drastically affected by the consequences of increased offshore oil drilling; and WIt~REAS, these consequences include not or~ly the aesthetic~3]y unpleasing specter of msssive oil drilling platforms, but also the prospect of irreversible damage to the environment as a result of air and water pollution resultiDg from oil drilling operations; and WHEREAS, the opening of even a few of the protected tracts along Orange County's coast to exploratory oil drilling could lead to frightening environmental consequences if a major oil discovery is found; 8nd WHEREAS, the City of Santa Ana is also concerned about the overall environment end well-being of the residents of the County of Orange as a whole; NOW, TH~qEPORE, HE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of Santa Ana does hereby express its opposition to the proposed agreement which would allow increased offshore oil drilling along the Orange County coastline. RESOLUTION NO. 85- 102 PAGE TWO BE IT FURTHER RE~0LV~D that this Council encourages the members of the State of California's Congressional delegation to vehemently oppose this proposed agreement as presently constituted.
