A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF SANTA ANA SUPPORTING A NEW
ALTERNATIVE UPSTREAM DAM SITE FOR THE
SANTA ANA RIVER PROJECT
WHEREAS, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineer has identified the Santa Ana
Flood Plan as posing the worst potential flood threat wast of the
Mississippi River and the State of California recoginizes it as the
most severe flood threat in the State; and
WHEREAS, over two million people live in the affected
area facing possible dollar damages that could exceed $10 billion; and
WHEREAS, Congress has directed the U.S. Army Corps of
Engineers to study new alternatives to the Mentone D~m portion of the
project; and
WHEREAS, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Upper Santa
Aha River Flood Storage Alternatives Study recommends a dam site that
is approximately four miles upstream from the Mentone Dam site; and
WHEREAS, said alternative dam site would be
approximately $200 million less expensive than the Mentone Dam and
would afford nearly the same flood protection as the Mentone Dam;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE CITY COUNCIL OF
THE CITY OF SANTA ANA supports the U.S. Army Corps of Engineer's
recommendation of this new dam site.
