Saint Joseph's Roman Catholic Church has been part of the
Santa Ana community, in one form or another, for one hundred
years. Built and dedicated in 1887, the original church was
destroyed in a fire in 1896. In.subsequent years numerous
buildings served as the church building. The church, however,
has always been located in the area of Minter, Lacy and stafford
(the.latter is now Civic Center Dr.) Streets.
The present church structure was constructed in 1947; the
first Mass was celebrated on Thanksgiving Day, November 28,
1947. Architect Harold Gimeno chose an English Gothic style
for the building with the intent of creating an original
and unique church, unmatched in the area. Even to this day
Saint Joseph's remains one of the only, if not only, true
gothic archetecture building in the County.

Statement of Significance (in one para&r,q~):.
St. Joseph Parish was founded in 1887, originally with the name of Our tady
07 the Rosary Church. At that time there was only one other Catholic
parish in Orange County., and it was located in Anaheim. The new
Santa Ana parish served the Catholic population from Anaheim to the
San Diego County line, from the ocean to Riverside County. The fiPst
church burned down. A new church was constructed and dedicated in
1897 with a new name---St. Joseph Church. Both these churches were
located at Civic Center Drive East and Lacy. in 1947 a new St. Joseph
Church was built at a si're one block to the west, namely, at the corner
of Civic Center Drive East and Mi'nter St. It was built in a classic
architectural style and has been an important place i'n the life of
many Orange County and Santa Ana fesi'dents. It is the focal pofnt of
a parish complex that is built along Civic Center Drive East from
Minter St. to Garfield St.

A SHORT HISTORY OF ST. JOSEPH'S PARISH - SANTA ANA, CALIFORNIA
The Catholic faith first came to what is now Orange County with
the establishment of Mission San Juan Capistrano on November 1,
1776. The first parish established in the county was Saint
Boniface, Anaheim, in I860.
In 1869 a new town was founded to the south of Anaheim; Santa
Aha. Because of its location, Santa Ana, from her earliest
years, was destined to become "the city" of the area.
Among the new settlers were a number of Catholics, who desired
to have a church of their own. In 1887 the new church of Our
Lady of the Rosary was built and dedicated. Fathers Robert
Byrne, Patrick Grogan and Riedhaar were named as the first
pastors, but since the Santa Aha Church still had only the
status of a mission and not a parish, they acted as
administrators. One Sunday afternoon in 1896, the little church
was completely destroyed by fire. The congregation, although
not very large in numbers, set about rebuilding with the
encouragement of Bishop Montgomery. The new church was
dedicated in 1896 by Bishop Montgomery (his first dedication in
his new diocese) under the patronage of Saint Joseph. Both the
old and the new church had been located on the corner of Lacy
and Stafford Streets (Civic Center Drive East), now occupied by
the parish school.
On property adjoining the church there was a small house which
was used as the first school with two lay teachers and only four
grades. It appears that this first school was on Stafford
Street, roughly between the school and convent of today. In
1916 a new school was erected. It too was located next to the
church on Lacy Street. The Sisters of Saint Joseph of Eureka
were invited to teach, and the same community has continued to
staff the school, although they are now the Sisters of Saint
Joseph of Orange. The playground was enlarged by the purchase
of more property and a residence was acquired as a rectory.
This house was used as a rectory up until December, 1947. It is
currently used as a residence by the parish custodian and his
family.
In 1929, under Father Wekerman, a new convent was built on the
corner of Stafford and Garfield next door to the rectory.
During this time property was acquired for a new church and
plans were drawn up; or at least an artist's conception.
However, it was felt that the proposed chruch was a bit too
pretentious for the size of the parish and the plan was
abandoned.

In 1943 the time was felt to be right for the construction of a
new church, and a site was obtained on the corner of Stafford
and Minter Streets. World War II prolonged the building
however, and it was not until January 7, 1947 that the building
operations were begun. The first Mass was celebrated on
Thanksgiving Day, November 28, 1947. A new rectory was also
built adjacent to the church.
The architecture of the church was termed by the architect as
"English Gothic". One noted feature of the new church are the
stained glass windows of the fifteen mysteries of the rosary,
commemorating the first church in Santa Aha of Our Lady of the
Rosary.
In 1952 the new Saint Joseph's school was built, subsequent
additions to theparish have been the addition of parking lots
across from the school and immediately behind the church. In
1953 St. Joseph's celebrated its golden Jubilee. As a fitting
sign of the faith of the parishioners, a commemorative chalice
made entirely from materials donated by the people, was
presented to the parish. St. Joseph Church has been part of the
Santa Aha Community for 100 years.
