RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA ANA
EXPRESSING OPPOSITION TO MEASURE A ON THE JUNE 1990
BALLOT WHICH WOULD MANDATE THAT ALL FUTURE
JAILS BE LOCATED IN SANTA ANA.
WHEREAS, Measure A
states that all future
600 feet from a school,
qualified for the June
jails shall be located
1990 Ballot which
in Santa Ana and

WHEREAS, the Board of Supervisors have already spend over
million in tax payers dollars and 7 years of analysis in
determining that Coal-Gypsum Canyon, which is located in a
rural portion of the County, is the best location for a new
jail,
WHEREAS, to build another jail in urban Santa Ana would
mean the jail would have to be over 40 stories high which is
not only extremely costly in terms of operations but is also
considered unsafe by Sheriffs Departments,
WHEREAS, Santa Ana is doing its fair share in housing the
inmate population with more than 50% of the County inmates in
the Central Jail and Intake Release Center,
WHEREAS, locating a jail only 600 feet from a school would
mean that children would be walking by or near a jail everyday,
NOW THEREFORE, be it resolved that on behalf of the
residents of Santa Ana we oppose Measure A on the June 1990
Ballot.
