HomeMy WebLinkAbout98-058 - 2002 California Police Summer Games357 RESOLUTION NO. 98- 0 58 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA ANA SUPPORTING THE 2002 CALIFORNIA POLICE SUMMER GAMES AND SANTA ANA POLICE DEPARTMENT'S BID TO HOST THE GAMES IN SANTA ANA WHEREAS, the purpose of the California Police Summer Games (the Games) is to promote friendship, sportsmanship, physical fitness and athletic competition among the law enforcement community; and WHEREAS, the first Games were held in San Diego in 1967, with 504 police athletes competing in sixteen sports; and WHEREAS, the Games have grown annually in the number of competitors and sporting events, with over 6,000 participating in 54 events in 1996; and WHEREAS, the California Police Athletic Federation (CPAF) was founded in 1970 as a tax exempt non-profit organization to plan and perpetuate the Games; and WHEREAS, the CPAF requires that any police organization desiring to petition to host the Games must first obtain the full support of its city, requiring that the hosting city provide the necessary staff support to host the event; and WHEREAS, hosting of the Games would not only present a positive image of the. city of Santa Ana, but also generate substantial revenues during the week-long event by the various hotels, restaurants and vendors used by the competitors and their families; and WHEREAS, if Santa Ana is successful in its bid to host the 2002 Games, the City Council declares that the proceeds derived therefrom, if any, shall benefit the DARE youth programs, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Santa Aha, and the Police Association's Widows and Orphans Fund. There is no fiscal impact associated with hosting the Games. 358 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA ANA supports the bid by the Santa Ana Police Department to host the 2002 California Police Summer Games in the City of Santa Ana.
