RECOMMENDED ACTION
Award a contract to Coast Appliance Parts, a Santa Ana vendor, for the
purchase of washers and dryers in the amount of $7,977.81.
. DISCUSSION
The Santa Ana Fire Department is responsible for cleaning and
decontaminating personal protective equipment (PPE). Soiled PPE
systems may expose firefighters to toxins and carcinogens by entering
the body through ingestion, inhalation, or absorption. Frequent,
appropriate cleaning is necessary to reduce the amount of
contamination; however, under no circumstances shall this be done in
home or public laundry facilities. Currently, the Fire Department has
limited washers and dryers in selected fire stations. The recommended
action will allow for laundry facilities in each fire station and will
facilitate the Fire Department in daily operations.
The notice inviting bids was advertised on January 11-12, 2004 (Exhibit
1), and bids were solicited. A summary of the bid invitations and bids
received is as follows:

Bids were received and opened on January 28, 2004 (Exhibit 1). The bid
received from Coast Appliance Parts is responsive to the specifications
and meet the City's requirements. The cost of the washers and dryers,
when combined with previous purchases this fiscal year from Coast
Appliance Parts, exceeds the $10,000 aggregate limit and requires City
Council approval.
