RECOMMENDED ACTION
1.
Authorize the acceptance of the donation of $25,000 from Volvo America
Inc., to be used by the Police Department Traffic Division for the
purchase of specialized equipment.
2.

Approve an Appropriation Adjustment recognizing Volvo America, Inc.'s
donation in the amount of $25,000 and appropriate same into the Police
Special Revenue Fund.
DISCUSSION
On June 2, 2003, the City Council approved the Police Department's award of
a $275,000 grant from the State of California Office of Traffic Safety. The
grant funding allows the Police Department's Traffic Division to deploy a
mobile Driving Under the Influence (DUI) education and driving simulation
classroom custom designed fifth-wheel trailer. . The trailer will be taken
to Santa Ana high schools, colleges, and other venues with the goal of
providing an educational program to students ages 15-22. The DUI mobile
classroom will showcase an externally projected wide-screen presentation of
a professionally produced video, and feature contemporary music and content
designed to appeal to the younger driver. The obj ecti ve of the grant
program is to draw a correlation between the decision to drive while
intoxicated and the unanticipated outcomes, which may be arrest, or
.collision resulting in injury or death.
Volvo America Inc., a prominent local business leader desires to contribute
to the local community and support local law enforcement by donating
$25,000 to the Police Department. This donation is for the purchase of
specialized equipment to be used in the Mobile DUI Education & Driving
Simulator Classroom.

FISCAL IMPACT
Approval of the Appropriation Adjustment will increase the Police Special
Revenue Fund account (account no. 024-01-5798) by $25,000, and appropriate
same into the Police Special Revenue expenditure account (account no. 024~
331-6641) .
