Adopt a resolution authorizing submittal of grant application for Land &
Water Conservation Fund to construct picnic shelters at Centennial
Regional Park.
DISCUSSION
. The State of California Department of Parks and Recreation is accepting
grant applications for the Land and Water Conservation Fund Program
(LWCF). The LWCF Program was established through federal legislation in
1965 and has been instrumental in the development of parks throughout the
Uni ted States. The City of Santa Ana has been successful in obtaining
grant funding from this source for various park improvement projects, the
most recent being the Santiago Nature Viewing Facility and Centennial
Playground Equipment
Staff is requesting authorization to submit a LWCF grant application to
replace and construct new picnic shelters at Centennial Regional Park.
The picnic shelters were installed in 1978 and are showing signs wood rot
and termite deterioration. The new shelters will be made with concrete
columns, metal supports and blue metal roofing to reflect a park like
theme. The grant funding guidelines identify picnic area improvements as
one of the top three highest priorities for this grant. The total grant
request will be $150,000. The LWCF Grant Fund requires a 50% match of
non-federal money. The matching funds will be available in future Park
Acquisition and Development Funds. The applications are due on May 3,
2004.
