On June 2, 2003, the City Council approved the award of a $275,000
grant to the Police Department from the State of California Office of
Traffic Safety. The grant allows funding for the Police Department's
Traffic Section to deploy a mobile, multi-media Driving Under the
Influence (D. U. I. ) education and driving simulation classroom custom
designed fifth-wheel trailer. The trailer will be taken to Santa Ana
high schools, colleges, and other venues with the goal of providing an
educational program to students ages 15-22. The D.U.I. mobile
classroom will showcase an externally projected video, and feature
contemporary music and content designed to appeal to the younger
driver.
In December 2003, the City entered into an agreement with Mattman
Specialty Vehicles for the purchase of a mobile multi-media D. U. I.
classroom fifth-wheel trailer. Upon completion, the trailer requires a
big screen television for the exterior, in order to showcase an
educational video that will be shown to students while waiting to go
inside the classroom.
