D:ISCUSSION In 1996 the then owner of the Major League Baseball team known as the California Angels executed a long-term agreement with the City of Anaheim. The agreement arranged for the team to continue playing its home games in the City of Anaheim, provided for the City to contribute more than $20 million toward the remodeling of the Anaheim Stadium, and required the team name to include the name "Anaheim" commencing with the 1997 baseball season. Since 1997, the team has been known, branded and identified as the Anaheim Angels. Subsequent to winning its first Major League Baseball World Series championship in 2002, the team was purchased by a new owner after the 2003 baseball season. Current news stories and other public reports indicate that the present team owner is considering a name change to one other than the "Anaheim Angels" and adding "Los Angeles" to the team name. The City of Santa Ana recognizes that the Anaheim Angels name brings community pride and economic benefits to Anaheim and the entire County of Orange. Team affiliation with Anaheim increases the County's national and international recognition, tourism, conventions, and other business opportunities. Thus, it is recommended that the Council adopt a resolution in support of the City of Anaheim's efforts to retain the "Anaheim Angels" name. F:ISCAL :IMPACT There is no fiscal impact associated with this action. 558-1 RESOLUTION NO. 2004-096 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF SANTA ANA SUPPORTING THE CITY OF ANAHEIM'S EFFORTS TO RETAIN THE NAME "ANAHEIM ANGELS" BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA ANA AS FOLLOWS: Section 1.
