HomeMy WebLinkAbout01-20-04 ~ SANTA ANA CITY COUNCIL COMMITTEE PUBLIC SAFETY Minutes of Meeting January 20, 2004 CALL TO ORDER Due to the lack of a quorum, an information-only meeting was held in the Police Department 4th Floor Conference Room, 60 Civic Center Plaza, Santa Ana, California. ATTENDANCE Councilmembers present: Mayor Pro Tem Brett Franklin (Absent), Councilmembers Alberta Christy, Claudia Alvarez (Absent). Staff present: Police Chief Paul Walters, Fire Chief Phil Garcia, Fire Marshal Lori Smith, PRCS Assistant Director Gerardo Mouet, Police Lt. Phil Archer, Parks Superintendent Mike Lopez; Park Ranger Randy Eldridge Public present: Representatives from TNT Fireworks, (John Kelly, Mark Gasman, Dave Guchione) and Kim McPeck \. SUMMARY OF DISCUSSIONS 1. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Approval of Minutes of the November 17, 2003 meeting was deferred until the next scheduled meeting. 2. POTENTIAL FIREWORKS ORDINANCE CHANGES Fire Marshall Smith stated the purpose for having the item on the agenda was to seek direction from the Committee to continue with attrition of fireworks booths or to activate a lottery. Representatives from TNT Fireworks reviewed what they are doing to educate the public on how to use fireworks safely. Mr. McPeck spoke about the need for new groups to have an opportunity to obtain a fireworks stand. \. ...... ...... '- 2 3. SANTIAGO PARK ENFORCEMENT UPDATE Lt. Archer gave an update on what has occurred in the park and that enforcement efforts are continuing. Superintendent Lopez and Ranger Eldridge reviewed their efforts concerning the full-time Park Ranger and continued positive programs in the park. 4. PUBLIC COMMENTS No additional public comments. 5. COMMITTEE MEMBER COMMENTS No comments. 6. ITEMS FOR NEXT MEETING A. Santiago Park Enforcement Update 7.
