The following Council Members were present: Alberta Christy Mike Garcia Staffs present were: Gerardo Mouet, Assistant Director, PRCSA Ron Ono, Park Planning/Design Mgr., PRCSA Lorraine Lazarine McCarty, Community Services Mgr., PRCSA Dolores Ramos, Management Aide, PRCSA Guest were: David Chapel, Vice Chair, Board of Recreation and Parks David Chapel, Jr., Youth Commissioner Rosa Noyola, Youth Commissioner ~ 1. APPROVAL OF MINUTES ACTION ITEM: Minutes of July 3, 2003 meeting were approved as submitted. 2. UPDATE ON CORPORATE SPONSORSHIP The corporate sponsorship program is designed to seek sponsorship in four areas: 1) Community Affairs-Special Events, 2) Youth and Community Services, 3) Park Services and 4) Adelphia Partnership for documentary productions. A committee composed of three members ofthe Board of Parks and Recreation, as well as close support from the Friends of Parks and Recreation has developed key steps in approaching corporations for sponsorship. It is important that the donor senses the professionalism of the agency, the importance and/or need of the contribution, and a confidence level that the donation will be spent wisely on the selected program. The committee will continue to meet to refine the program. ACTION ITEM: Check on the possibility of pursuing funding under Philip Morris and/or Altria. 3. YOUTH EXPO REPORT Youth Expo 04 is scheduled for October 2004. The change in date is to better coordinate with the college and universities recruiting season. Next years event slogan will be "Keep it Clean Kids-Inspiring Together" or (KICK IT) campaign aimed at eliminating blight and graffiti in the city. The committee requested Waste Management Companies also be involved and the schools be contacted, since students are required to provide community "" '-' services as part of their educational experience. Due to the construction of the Hector Godinez High School at Centennial Park, staff will be looking for a new location to hold the event. ACTION ITEM: I) Involve the Culinary Art schools to provide demonstrations at the event. 2) Include classic cars and motorcycles display and demonstration back to the event. 3) Include CHOC vans for the Safety Fair. 4) Include karate demonstrations at the event. 4. KIDS DAY EVENT Approximately 1,500 participants attended the event at Santa Ana Stadium. The Fluor Corporation donated 300 student backpacks filled with school supplies to needy kids in the 4th and 5th grade. The Boys and Girls Club and PRCSA staff selected the 4th and 5th graders that received backpacks. Tbe owners of Gonzales Northgate Market provided picnic lunches for every one at the event. One of the exciting highlights at the event was the Salsa Tasting Contest. Mrs. Teresa Leal prepared the winning homemade salsa. Tbe winning salsa will be served at Taqueria Guadalajara restaurant for one year. During the event a raffle was also held for a new bicycle. The Boys and Girls Club anticipates the planning for the 2004 Kids Day Event will begin in the winter of next year. 5. PUBLIC COMMENTS '-' · Rosie Noyola indicated the Youth Commission is excited about the "Kick-it" Program. She personally wants to be involved with a recycling program at school. · David Chapel indicated that the Youth Expo committee needs to communicate with DCI and the Orange County High School ofthe Arts to participate in the event. 6. COMMITTEE MEMBER COMMENTS · Council member Christy indicated Youth Expo needs more exposure and visibility in the community. The committee needs to recruit youth to get involved and give back to the community. · Council member Garcia indicated that the Youth Expo committee needs to seek grants to get people involved and active in the inner city. 7. ITEMS FOR FUTURE MEETINGS: At the next meeting the committee requested the following two items to be presented. . Park Naturalist Program. . Children's Winter Holiday Event. The committee requested the following three items to be presented at a future meeting. . Black History Event . McFadden Technology Center . Santa Ana Read and Create Program at Triangle ......
