HomeMy WebLinkAbout11-09-05 CITY OF SANTA ANA CITY COUNCIL COMMITTEE ON TECHNOLOGY Minutes of Regular Meeting November 9, 2005 CALL TO ORDER The meeting convened at 6:02 p.m. in the Room 831, 20 Civic Center Plaza, Santa Ana, California ATTENDANCE City Council Committee members present: Carlos Bustamante, Claudia Alvarez and Lisa Bist Staff members present: Tom Gergen, Information Systems Manager; Carol Molina- Espinoza, Sr. Management Analyst; Francisco Gutierrez, Finance Director; Alex Green, Information Services; Rob Richard, Library Director; Ben Kaufman, Chief Assistant City Attorney; and, Steve Harding, Deputy City Manager, City Manager's Office AGENDA ITEMS Approval of Minutes for Meeting of June 8, 2005 (Bist, Alvarez) Presentation on Wireless Fidelity - William Romesburg, Consultant William Romesburg provided a brief presentation on the Wi-Fi andWiMax as follows: . Definied "Wi-Fi" and the next technology breakthrough: WiMax . Wi-Fi covers 150 ft in radius, WiMax covers up to a 10 mile range . WiMax is being tested in various cities throughout the world, including Philadelphia, Cleveland, London and Rio de Janeiro. . Next technological breakthrough is the Wi-Cell, where cellular telephones contain Wi-Fi technology, Nokia Models currently offers this option . City's Planned Initiatives include Fire (in-filed wireless information and vehicle location devices), Fleet Management (tracking mechanic activity), and Police (wireless booking of prisoners). . Future initiatives include interdepartmental wireless integration, GIS availability, high speed wireless internet access, transportation information, downtown wireless, wireless for residential and business customers, and the Integrated Justice System. . Councilmember Alvarez requested a demo at the next meeting of the Integrated Justice System . Councilmember Bustamante pointed out a potential need for vehicle tracking of non-City vehicles WebPage Update Rob Richard discussed the updates for the Web Pages as follows: . Presented statiscal figures; such as 50% of the verbage is read on a monitor versus reading on paper, it is 25% slower to read on the internet than on paper, and the 3 second rule: an individual will search for 3 seconds, then assume it is not available . Blyle and Associates provided web writing courses . November 15 is the go live date . Expect a couple of months for enhancements and add-ons to be provided . Demonstrated rotating graphics on the front page . Highlighted that from mid-November to the end of January, most individuals are concentrating on the holidays and not on the WebPage, which will provide the City the additional time to improve the WebPages. Councilmember Alvarez requested to have the link to the Megan site and Council member Bustamante discussed the intranet.
