PUBLIC COMMENTS Suszan Ales thanked the Recreation and Community Services Agency and Councilmember Moreno for assistance with a recent fundraising event at Atona Park. Ales also requested Council's help in petitioning Rancho Santiago to allow use of its college pool by neighborhood children during summer months, and City staff assistance with the complicated Federal Emergency Management Agency application process for flood insurance rebates. CITY COUNCIL MINUTES 167 MAY 6, 1996 COMMENTS Alberta Christy advised the Council of an upcoming Community Job Fair sponsored by the Valley High Neighborhood Association at Centennial Park on May 18, 1996 between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., encouraged the listening audience and Council to attend, and invited small business owners to advertise their job openings at the Fair by calling (714) 667-2266. 90.B. CITY COUNCIL COMMENTS Councilmember Espinoza: - requested staff assist Suszan Ales with her request regarding use of the Rancho Santiago College pool; - suggested a flood insurance application be forwarded to impacted residents with the water bills; - thanked the Public Works Agency for the timely repair of the pothole he had reported at the April 15 Council meeting. Councilmember Lutz: - congratulated Police Chief Paul Walters concerning the recent reductions in crime statistics; - reported the "dinosaurs," a popular exhibit, were back at MainPlace Mall; - invited the listening audience to attend the Spurgeon Clock Tower resetting on May 17, 1996 and the open house to follow at the Santora Building; - asked staff to see that weeds are removed from the federal courthouse construction site; and - expressed support for use of the College pool by neighborhood children. Councilmember Richardson: - reiterated support for College pool use by the neighborhood; - suggested interested citizens might donate bicycles to the Elks Club (which was refurbishing them for a Bike-A-Thon for the Boys and Girls Club) by calling (714) 224-9068; - commended the Police Chief on the reduced crime statistics and requested a presentation on STOP (Street Terrorist Offender Program) at a future Council meeting; CITY COUNCIL MINUTES 168 MAY 6, 1996 COMMENTS complimented Planning and Building, Community Development, and Recreation and Community Services staff for their support of the April 27 "Christmas in April" community painting project; - commented on the number of positive community events such as the recent Pet Adopt-A-Thon and the Imagination Celebration; - congratulated retiring City Attorney Ed Cooper for his long and excellent service to the City; and - wished his wife Vivien a Happy Birthday on May 7! Councilmember McGuigan: - also expressed congratulations to Police Chief Walters; - commended Alberta Christy for her efforts in promoting community job fairs; - amplified on Councilmember Richardson's list of positive community events by adding Volunteer Connection Day, Special Olympics at Mater Dei High School, and the "HUG" day sponsored by Western Medical Center. Councilmember Moreno: - expressed support for Rancho Santiago pool use by neighborhood children; - thanked the Alona Park Neighborhood Association for asking him to participate in its fundraiser; - related an incident at the Alona park event wherein a City firefighter had made disparaging remarks about his Council position, then requested City Manager David Ream and Fire Chief Marc Martin to admonish City staff regarding uncivil conduct towards City public officials. Mayor Pulido commended stafffor successfully securing a $200,000 grant to develop Fallbrook Park and requested City Manager Ream and stalTwork with the neighborhood to determine how the funds should be used.
