Charles Bordenave commented regarding several issues including but not limited to: the Fire
Department Seagrave pumper renovation, the Flowerdale Route 22 off-ramp beautification
project, and high City employee salaries; and commended Councilmembers Espinoza and Moreno
on their excellent service to the citizens and presented them with American flags.

CITY COUNCIL COMMENTS
Councilmember Moreno:
requested increased graffiti removal on weekends;
commented on the need to improve the lawns and enforce speed at Cabrillo
Park; and
reported vacant lots accumulating trash and debris on Poinsettia Street, behind
the new Northgate Market, and near Fairview and 5"' Streets;
and noted an A-frame sign was creating a traffic hazard at Fairview and 5th
Streets.
In response to Councilmember Espinoza's inquiry, City Manager Ream indicated staff would
provide Council with a report this week detailing the costs of installing flags along arterials during
major patriotic holidays. Espinoza reported his attendance at the Santa Ana "Pop Warner"
football opening and reminded the audience that games would be held every Saturday through
December at Memorial Park.
Mayor Pro Tern Richardson commented on the need, to develop an incentive program to
encourage removal ofunpermitted signs perhaps in partnership with the Southland Economic
Development Corporation,.
Councilmember McGuigan:
reported Codan US, the 15th largest biomedical firm in Orange County with 140
employees, had moved to Santa Ana;
reminded the audience of the upcoming Cops for Kids Custom Car Show at the
Santa Ana Stadium on September 7 between I0:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.;
noted trash pickups would occur a day later this week due to the Labor Day
holiday; and
commented on the recent Los Angeles Times article featuring the arts in Santa
Aha and noted in particular the upcoming opening of the Very Special Arts
Gallery which features works of people with disabilities.
In response to Councilmember McGuigan's inquiries, Fire Chief Martin explained the response
times in a recent Orange County Register related to the Orange County Fire Authority, not the
Santa Ana Fire Department, and reported on Santa Ana's outstanding performance in the recent
Fire Olympic Games.

Councilmember Lutz:
commented on the high level ofvolunteerism in Santa Ana as demonstrated by
the fire pumper restoration project and recent large number of volunteers
recognized at the Recreation, Parks and Community Services banquet;
reported the historic Howe-Waffle House was undergoing renovation and
needed volunteers to assist with sprinkler system installation (call project
coordinator Tim Rush at 547-6558, ext. 2); and
informed the audience that former Councilmember Lisa Mills had been chosen as
a donor for a leukemia patient and expressed hope for a positive medical
outcome.
Councilmember Brett Franklin:
asked staff'to investigate the possibility of restricting train whistle blowing in
residential neighborhoods (Councihnember Moreno suggest Franklin research
previous Council actions on this subject);
suggested staff contact the City of Santa Monica for information regarding the
use of"lost spaces" (remnant parcels, parking lots) for recreation and park
activities
expressed his thanks to the Chamber of Commerce particularly President
Michael Metzler for the Chamber's support of education in Santa Ana;
reported his attendance at the Petsmart grand opening at 17th Street and Tustin
and asked that Store Director Larry Cook be invited to a future Council meeting
to tell the Council about Petsmart's animal adoption program; and
urged residents to continue volunteering for historic preservation projects such
as the fire pumper renovation.
Mayor Pulido:
thanked the Police Department for assistance with a "problem home" in
Morrison Park;
reported he had recently met with Pacific Care representatives Alan Hoops and
Nick Franklin and welcomed the 800-employee corporation to Santa Ana;
suggested anyone interested in attending the Very Special Arts gallery opening
contact City Hall regarding invitations; and
requested staff investigate how many companies were headquartered in Santa
Ana and also contact Fidelity National Title Company about relocating to the
City.
