REMOVAL OF WARD 1 BOARD AND COMMISSION MEMBERS (MORENO) Mayor Pulido reported that Ceuncilmember Moreno had left the meeting due to illness and indicated no action would be taken on Item 85.A. COMMENTS 90.A. PUBLIC COMMENTS Clarence Flint and Ronald Day complained that Birch Park Senior Center staff had been relocated to the Southwest Senior Center, and that Birch Park Center programming was being directed toward teen rather than senior needs. Councilmember McGuigan requested that Recreation and Community Services Executive Director Cleve Williams investigate and report to the Council. CITY COUNCIL MINUTES 84 MARCH 15, 1999 COMMENTS 90.B. COUNCIL COMMENTS Councilmember Bist · thanked staff for help with the "possum issue" (explaining the role possums play in the natural environment); · reported Discovery Museum would dedicate an "eco art" mural created by students from Jackson Elementary, Carr Intermediate, and Century High School on March 16, 1999; and requested the Cable Television Advisory Board to follow up on complaints about Comcast Cablevision's roalignment of its broadcast channels last month that had restricted viewing access for owners of older television sets. Mayor Pro Tem Lutz · reported he, Councilmembers Franklin and Christy, and former Assemblyman Jim Morrissey had attended the ribbon cutting ceremony for the new concession stand at El Salvador Park on March 13, noted the facility had been designed "in-house" by Assistant Park/Landscape Planner Susie Furjanic, and recounted a number of park improvements accomplished through the long-term efforts of the Santiago Little League. Councilmember McGuigan · noted that Police Officer Mona Ruiz had been featured as one of six female heroes in an Orange County Reqister Business Section article on March 15, 1999. Councilmember Christy · indicated her first National League of Cities Conference in early March had proven to be an excellent learning experience; and · reported she had been the keynote speaker at the Sheraton Anaheim's "Kudos for Kids" recognition ceremony for academic achievers. Councilmember Franklin · echoed Councilmember McGuigan's compliments regarding Officer Ruiz and elaborated on Mayor Pro Tem Lutz's comments regarding the Santiago Little League accomplishments at El Salvador Park; · commended the Park Santiago Neighborhood Association on its excellent Association newsletter; · reported an informative meeting regarding "Y2K" had been held in the Santiago Neighborhood; · noted an upcoming Arbor Day celebration and planting involving Adams and Jefferson School students and the Santa Ana Kiwanis Club on April 3 at Thornton Park, and indicated that as part of the City's recognition of Arbor Day, seedling trees would be available to residents between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. at Thornton Park, Santa Ana Stadium and Morrison Park on April 3 as well; and · requested that the Council meeting be adjourned in honor of 50-year resident Carlos Luis Bustamante, the father of Community Redevelopment and Housing Commissioner Carlos Bustamante, who had recently passed away. CITY COUNCIL MINUTES 85 MARCH 15, 1999 COMMENTS Mayor Pulido · requested the City Attorney to update the Council regarding the status of reimbursement from the Orange County bankruptcy; asked that status reports regarding the Bristol widening, the Mater Dei expansion project and the City's tree program be provided at a future Council meeting; and indicated the City Council meeting would also be adjourned in honor of long time Santa Aha resident and World War II U.S. Marine Corps veteran Miles Leach.
