90.A. PUBLIC COMMENTS
Dr. John Bennett, representing the Santa Ana Unified School District
expressed concern about the temporary traffic barriers in French Park
Maria Gutierrez Garcia, Principal of Davis School, expressed concerns
about the safety of the school children at Davis and distributed copies of a
petition from parents of students at the school
Sally Ramirez, representing SEW Local 347 addressed Council relative to
contract negotiations with the City's part-time employees and the need for
benefits for these employees
90.B. CITY COUNCIL COMMENTS
Councilmember Alvarez
• Encouraged adults and children to walk to school together to raise
awareness about the importance of safe walking behavior on October
2, 2002
• Noted that Santa Ana has a large population and that all
neighborhoods have traffic issues. She further noted that the petition
process is complex and confusing and she encouraged the Public
Works Agency to look at other ways to implement neighborhood traffic
plans
• Reported that the City Council approved an agreement for the
cataloging, processing, and purchasing of youth Spanish language
books and materials, and encouraged residents to check out the
Library collection; she further stressed the importance of being bi-
lingual
• Announced that pursuant to the One City One Book program, the
Mayor has selected Steinbeck's "The Pearl" as the recommended
choice for Santa Ana residents to read; she further noted that this book
is in Spanish
• Encouraged Council members to continue a dialog with Part-time
employees in order to reach an acceptable agreement
• Asked the Council to adjourn in memory of Mike Silvas, who was a
former Police Officer and former investigator with the District Attorney's
Office

fair to address the safety of children, pedestrian and home safety as
well as CPR training and education on the Amber Alert, Megan's Law,
etc; she suggested that this event be held within the next 45-60 days.

Mayor Pro Tern McGuioan
• Congratulated the Wilshire Square neighborhood for a very successful
summer concert on July 27, 2002
• Noted that the opening of the Skateboard Park on August 3, 2002 was
a tremendous event and thanked all the individuals who made this park
a reality
Councilmember Bist
• Congratulated Pat McGuigan for her efforts with respect to the
Skateboard Park
• Noted that there were over 500 people in attendance at the Wilshire
Square Concert and that there were several other neighborhood
events being planned including concerts at Morrison Park on
September 21, Washington Park on October 5, and Floral Park on
August 31.
• Announced that she was working with Councilmember Solorio in the
planning of a Expo type event for Seniors on August 16, 2002 from 9
A.M. to 2 P.M.

• Thanked Dr. Bennett and Sallie Ramirez for their leadership
- • Announced that the Mayor's State of the City address could be viewed
on Channel 3
• Noted that the 1st lady of the State came to visit at the Delhi Center on
July 26, 2002
• Announced that on August 3, 2002 there was an opening reception for
a photographic collection representing Latino life in the United States
and that there were between 300-400 in attendance
• Announced that the annual Zoofari sponsored by the Friends of the
Santa Ana Zoo will be held on August 24, 2002 from 5:30 P.M. to
midnight
Councilmember Franklin
• Noted that the selected book for the One City One Book program, "The
Pearl' is available at Martinez Bookstore
• Noted that a local real estate agent who was struck by a street
sweeper was told by City staff that he should take the matter to the
Small Claims Court . Councilmember Franklin asked staff to look into
this matter
• Thanked the Mayor for his State of the City address

• Confirmed that President George Bush is coming to Santa Ana on
August 23, 2002 at the Bowers Museum
