WORK STUDY SESSION

Santa Ana Zoo at Prentice Park Update - Parks, Recreation, and
Community Services Agency
Highlights of this work study session are as follows:
· Gerardo Mouet, Executive Director of Parks, Recreation, and
Community Services Agency made a presentation and update of the
Santa Ana Zoo at Prentice Park
· An update was given on the long range Master Plan, which was
adopted in November, 1990; various developments at the Zoo were
also highlighted
· Zoo signage, marketing ideas, and potential future exhibits were
outlined and discussed
· Tierra de las Pampas Exhibit campaign is underway to raise funds for
design and construction; ground breaking should take place by the end
of 2008, and the grand opening in the Summer of 2009
· Jay Trevino, Executive Director of Planning and Building Agency made
a presentation on the status of the Saddleback Inn property. Highlights
of his presentation include:

PUBLIC COMMENTS
. Property owned by the Elks Club; current potential ideas for
property include a mixed-use project
. Gil Marrero and Amy Atherton gave an update of their efforts for
future redevelopment opportunity on the property
. Jim Ross, Executive Director of the Public Works Agency discussed a
parcel of property directly across the street from the Zoo which the City
has entered into an agreement with CalTrans for maintenance
Council discussion ensued and members provided several suggestions for
the future of the Zoo.
PUBLIC COMMENTS
Steve Baur, Stanley Fiala, and George Garcia raised concerns related to
the city; Julie Stroud applauded the presentation given by staff and gave
suggestions related to a mascot and future exhibits at the Zoo; Steve
McGuigan thanked the Council for having the work study on site at the
Santa Ana Zoo, and announced various upcoming events.
