PROPOSED DISCOVERY SCIENCE CENTER EXPANSION - JOE
ADAMS, PRESIDENT, DSC
Highlights of this presentation are as follows:
· Discovery Science Center (DSC) serves over 438,000 community
members each year
· Reaches over 237,000 students through field trips and outreach
programs each year
· The DSC is dedicated to educate young minds, assist teachers, and
increase public understanding and appreciation of science, math and
technology
· Field trips focus on California Science Standards; each month is
dedicated to a different grade level
· Field trips = 91,000 students annually; outreach programs = 145,000
students annually
· th largest Science Center Outreach Program in the U.S.

STUDY SESSION
. There are 31 elementary schools in Santa Ana that participate in
Science After School programs; 1,500 students each week
. DSC Budget = $9,000,000
. 16,000 member families (1,428 in Santa Ana)
. 20th largest Science Center in the United States
. The 1st Monday of each month is Santa Ana Free Day; in 2007, 5,802
Santa Ana visitors came on this day; in 2008 to date, 6,220 Santa Ana
residents have taken advantage of this program
. The DSC brings in over $2,000,000 annually from the Board and its
partners
. $4 per visitor goes into the local area economy
. The museum is ranked the 11th best in the Country
. Future goals include:
o #1 outreach program in the United States
o Top 10 Science Center in attendance
o Top 5 best Science Centers in the Country
. Plans for new permanent exhibits, expansion for space and parking,
and new Exhibit Hall
. In 2009 will have a $2,500,000 Sports themed exhibit and a
$5,000,000 Space Exhibit
. Expanded exhibits will include traveling exhibits from the Smithsonian
. Currently in negotiations to purchase the Red Roof Inn
. Plan to build a science campus north, including a crime lab
. Crime lab will be a real working science lab plus exhibit
. Exhibits will include a series of virtual crime scenes setting the stage
for visitors to unravel crimes by using science and also learn how to be
good citizens
. The red Roof expansion will include 134 spaces for parking, eating area
for school groups, and 10,000 square foot environmental exhibit
. The cost of the proposed expansion is approximately $60,000,000
. DSC is currently securing a working lab for operational revenue stream,
$4,000,000 down payment, and is in escrow on the property
. DSC is asking the City to guarantee financing of bonds and to be the
bond conveyor

. Noted that the Santa Ana free days on the 1st Monday of each month
have been very well received

Councilmember Tinaiero
· Congratulated the Discovery Science Center on an impressive amount
of work invested to make the Center the #1 Science Center in the
nation
Councilmember Bustamante
· Complimented the Board of Directors of the Discovery Science Center
on an exciting project
Councilmember Martinez
· Noted that she appreciated Mr. Adams' passion and vision and that the
Discovery Center has put Santa Ana on the map
Councilmember Sarmiento
· Noted that the Science Center was an academic center and as such,
was an iconic moment for the City
At this time, Councilmembers Bustamante and Sarmiento left the meeting.
