Subject: Agenda Item 10 - City Council Meeting 9/16/25

Santa Ana City Council Members,
I am writing to express my support for a park in Washington Square Neighborhood. I have been a resident of
Washington Square for nine (9) years now. When my husband and I first purchased our home our children
were 3 % and 6 months old; we lived the most park heavy years in our home without one single park in
walking distance. As any parent of young children knows, it is a time consuming, and sometimes stressful
chore, to get kids packed and loaded into a car to drive to a park; it takes planning the perfect time and
ensuring you have diapers, snacks, water, change of clothes etc. so much that sometimes you just end up
skipping the park. Which is such a sad thing as children need to be outside in fresh air, they need to run
around and play and learn to climb and swing, they meet other kids and learn to socialize and its a great place
for parents to meet other parents that live close by as well. During COVID when our kids were stuck at home
our only option was to go play in the parking lot at Wilson school as there was no park nearby and we didn't
have the time to drive to one as we adults were still at home trying to work.
My children are now 9 and 12 years old so we don't spend much time at parks anymore but when they heard
there was a possibility to get a park in our neighborhood they were still very excited....the first question from
my 9 year old son was "Are they going to have a skate park?" and my daughter asked, "Mom, am I old enough
to sign the petition? I need them to know I want a park too!!"
You can see from our one example that families and residents of Washington Square of all ages would enjoy a
park that is walkable to our homes and we hope that you will strongly consider it for our neighborhood!!
Sincerely,
Lindsay Manning and family (Christopher, Kennedy (12) and James (9))

Dear Council members,
My husband and I have lived in the same home in Washington Square for 48 years, raised our three children, supported the
district’s schools, Ran PTA’s, AYSO soccer, Boy and Girl Scouts and attended church. Having a walk-to park would have
really helped in many ways. My husband and I live on N Olive and have had our eye on the vacant land and lamented on
why there is not park we can walk to. We would say, “Santa Ana is park poor.”
Yes, we support the purchase of as much of the available land as possible for the proposed Washington Square Park. I have
looked at the concept layouts, and I know we can do even better. I’ll give my design “2 cents” when the time is right.
Living on N Olive gave all of us residents a special environment, living under the giant old Carob trees. The last 80
parkway Caribs in Santa Ana were removed this year and will not be replaced with Carobs in parkways. I am requesting
that Carob trees be planted in every park in Santa Ana, particularly in the parks around areas that lost their Carobs. We lost
80 trees, can the city get 80 trees in the ground?
You see, the tree is a habitat for particular wild life dear to my heart. We have a 16-year-old Lilac Crowned Amazon
parrot from the flocks around us and Orange County. We named him Lucky as he crashed into our window when he was
too young to fly and misinterpreted the reflection. We were there to save him from the cats. Lucky misses his cousins that
no longer have Carobs to feast on their pods and nest in the branches. They just fly by. So yes, to the proposed park and
please plant Carobs.
Respectfully,
Connie Major

Dear Members of the City Council,
My name is Tony Michalski and I am a resident and homeowner in Washington Square.
I am submitting this email to indicate my strong support for the development of a neighborhood park in
Washington Square.
Converting the vacant lot to a neighborhood park would not only significantly benefit the community in and
around Washington Square, but it would enhance the city and add to the quality of life of its residents.
Please vote yes to move forward with the park.
Thank you for your consideration.
Regards,
Tony

Hello,
I am a resident of Washington Square and live about 5 houses down from the proposed park location. My
family and I fully support a park at that location. Our community is severely in need of more open space for
kids. We drive to a different city whenever we want to take our kids to a playground. On a daily basis, driving
down 17th, my kids are subject to sights of people sleeping on the pavement, sometimes barely clothed, or
acting erratically. The children in our community see suffering that is beyond their years, they should have a
safe space where they can be kids.
Thank you,
Lindsey Lagos

Subject:WASHINGTON SQUARE PARK PROPOSAL - Agenda Item 10 City Council Mtg 9/16/25

I hope this message finds you well.
I’m writing to express my full support for the proposed creation of a park in the Washington Square
neighborhood. As a resident of this community and a dog owner, I believe it is essential to have a dedicated
space for recreation and relaxation. Currently, we are surrounded by heavily trafficked streets—17th Street on
one side, Bristol with its ongoing construction, and Flower and Civic Center Drive, which are also very busy.
Unfortunately, there are no green spaces nearby where residents can unwind safely.
The location being considered for the park is ideal. It would serve as a much-needed refuge—a small
sanctuary—for those of us who live here. I truly hope the city will take our request into consideration and
approve the development of this park.
I’m confident that most residents support this initiative, even if not everyone is actively involved in local
proposals and projects. We assure you that we will make excellent use of the space and are committed to
keeping the park clean and well-maintained.
Thank you very much for your attention and for considering the needs of our community.
Please vote YES to move forward with the park.

Dear City Council,
I would like to voice my strong support for a city park in Washington Square.
I live right on the property in question, and I don’t want to lose the peace I have enjoyed for over the last 30 years to
high traffic and noise.
And the likely loss of property value to high density housing, which is not fair.
If would be different if the developers built nice single family homes to match what is already in the neighborhood.
But they won’t, and we have seen what developers have done to Santa Ana in the past – building high density housing
that simply turns into slums.
We have enough of that already.
Thank you for your thoughtful consideration on this matter.

Hello respected council members,
I am a Washington square resident and I fully support a walkable park in our neighborhood.
Santa Ana is already a park poor city with limited green spaces for a dense population.
This walkable park would greatly improve the quality of life for all local residents.
This empty land is a prime opportunity for the City to meet its environmental justice objectives and it would be
a shame if the City did not act decisively to secure this land for future development.
Thank you for your time.
