Santa Ana Police Department Homicide Section Sergeant M. Sarabia #2565 notified me of an officer-involved
shooting that had just occurred in the area of S. Rosewood Avenue and W. Bishop Street in the city of Santa

, DUULYHG DW WKH +RPLFLGH 6HFWLRQ ZLWKLQ WKH ,QYHVWLJDWLRQV %XUHDX RI WKH 6DQWD $QD 3ROLFH 'HSDUWPHQW 6HUJHDQW
Sarabia conducted a preliminary briefing of the incident with detectives from the Homicide Section.
Sergeant Sarabia informed us that he was notified earlier this evening by Acting Watch Commander O. Sanchez
#2703 of an officer-involved shooting that had occurred at approximately 1841 hours at S. Rosewood Avenue and W.

FRQGXFWHG D WUDIILF VWRS RI D YHKLFOH DQG WKH GULYHU H[LWHG WKH YHKLFOH DUPHG ZLWK D KDQGJXQ $Q RIILFHULQYROYHG
shooting ensued, and the suspect fled northbound on S. Rosewood Ave., eastbound on W. Myrtle St., then
southbound to the area of 400 S. Shelton St., where responding officers located him suffering from apparent gunshot
wounds.

A female, subsequently identified as (DOB ), arrived on scene and identified Melgarejo as
her son.
Officer Santaella provided a public safety statement indicating he fired his service weapon six times in a northbound
GLUHFWLRQ IURP 5RVHZRRG $YHQXH DQG %LVKRS 6WUHHW 7KHUH ZDV RQH RXWVWDQGLQJ VXVSHFW ZKR ZDV WKH GULYHU RI WKH
vehicle and was armed with a handgun.
The items at the scene where Melgarejo was located consisted of a cell phone and clothing cut from Melgarejo's
person by paramedic personnel.
A male identified as (DOB ), who resided at , reported hearing five
JXQVKRWV DQG REVHUYLQJ WKH VXVSHFW GLVFDUG DQ LWHP LQWR WKH EDFN\DUG RI D QHLJKERULQJ UHVLGHQFH 6DQWD $QD 3ROLFH
Department Patrol Officer M. Marignoli #3858 recovered a black baseball hat with a white "B" logo in the backyard of
1048 W. Myrtle Street.
Sergeant Barragan then concluded the briefing.
I subsequently returned to the Santa Ana Police Department with Sergeant Sarabia and Corporal McClasky.

Officer Cofer is a member of the Santa Ana Civic Center Patrol Team. Officer Cofer was wearing a blue, long-sleeve
polo T-shirt, blue jeans, and black boots. The polo had a printed Santa Ana Police Office badge on the left chest,
