Forensic Scientist F. Burke from the Orange County Crime Lab coordinated the documentation and
collection of the evidence. Forensic Specialist J. Tran along with Forensic Specialist K. Cogert, Forensic
Specialist S. Moore and Forensic Specialist L. Camacho from the Orange County Crime Lab assisted
Forensic Scientist Burke with the processing of the crime scene. Refer to Forensic Scientist Burke's
C .S.I. report under Forensic Report 13-48764 for further information.
Weather and Lighting:
The weather condition at 0800 hours was partly cloudy, slightly windy with a temperature of
approximately 60 degrees Fahrenheit. The weather info1mation was obtained from the AccuWeather
website . At the time of my arrival, 1045 hours, the ground was dry and there was ample lighting
provided by the sun.
Scene:
The scene was located in the east alley of 805 S. Townsend Street, City of Santa Ana, County of
Orange, California. The crime scene was protected by yellow crime scene tape securing the north
portion of the east alley at 701 S. Townsend Street. The south portion of the east alley at 825 S.
Townsend Street was se cured by crime scene tape. There was also crime scene tape securing the east
and west sides of the alley. There were Santa Ana Police Officers positioned at the north, so uth, east and
west perimeters.
The east alley of 805 S. Townsend Street is a two -way, north/south, asphalt paved road. There are no
marked lanes for north/south traffic. The speed limit in the alley is 10mph. Monta Vista A venue is to the
north of the alley. Monta Vista is a two-way, two-lane, east/west, asphalt paved road with single family
residential homes on the north side and apartment comp lexes on the south side. The speed limit for

Monta Vista is 25mph. McFadden Avenue is to the south of the alley. McFadden is a two-way, four -lane
(2 lanes for each direction of travel), east/west, asphalt paved road with apartment complexes on the
north side and single family residential homes on the south side.
The east alley of 805 S. Townsend Street had two marked black and white Santa Ana Police Department
Police cars parked along the east side of the alley . The Santa Ana Police cars were parked facing north.
The Santa Ana Police cars were parked in a manner which Police car #880 was the furthest north and
was approximately 2 ' south of 805 S. Townsend Street garage #1. Santa Ana Police car #854 was
parked directly behind Police car #880.
A plastic gray toy handgun with a black handle was on the asphalt in the east alley of 805 S. Townsend
Street. The toy handgun was on the west side of the alley, approximately 3' south of garage # 1. North of
garage #1 also on the west side alley's asphalt was a used syringe which had the needle covered by an
orange cap. The syringe appeared to be related to narcotics, it did not have a sterile appearance as if it
could be used for any medical purposes. Along with the syringe, a pair of Peerless handcuffs and
medical paraphernalia which appeared to be an LV. bag and a breathing bag were on the asphalt. Next to
the syringe, handcuffs and medical paraphe rnalia was apparent blood on the asphalt.
805 S. Townsend Street has two garage structures in the east alley. The garage structures have a short
dri v eway which is west from the directional north/south east alley. The garages are numbered #1 -#10.
Garage s #1 -#5 are south of the driveway. Garages #6 -#10 are north of the driveway. Some garages
are missing numbers howe ve r there is a number pattern.
Parked in the driveway betwe en the two garage structures were four vehicle s. Parked at the northwest
portion of the dri veway was a Gray 2000 GMC Yukon with California license plate # Parked
immediately south of the GMC Yukon was a Blue 2002 Ford Explorer with a California license pl ate
# Parked at the southwest portion of the drivewa y was a Gray 2007 GMC Sierra with
California license plate # Parked at the southeast portion of the driveway directly behind the
GMC Yukon was a Silver 2 003 Nissan Xterra wit h California li cen se plate # P arked
immediately south of the N is san Xterra was a Black 1993 Honda Accord with a California license plate

Summarv:
On Sunday 06/23/2013, at approximately 0807 hours, Santa Ana Po lice Officers G. Ayala #3294 and S.
Esqui ve l #3295 wer e patrolling the east a lle y of 800 S. T ownsend Street. The Santa Ana Police Officers
we r e both dri vin g marked black and white Santa Ana Police car s and wearing their Santa Ana Poli ce
Department Police unifo rms . Santa Ana Police Officers Ayala and Esquivel were invo l ved in an Officer
Involved Shooting. Both Officers used their duty weapons to fire at the su spect. Officer Ayala fired in a
northern direction and Officer Esquivel fi r ed in a western directi on . The suspect fe ll to the ground and
was subsequently handc uffed. Approximately four feet south of the suspect, a gray plasti c toy ha ndgun
with a black ha ndle was found. The suspect was fou nd to be in possession of a syringe w ith an orange
cap . Two unident ified subj ects fled the scene and were no t located. The uniden tified subjects that fled
were considered witnesses and not wanted for a known crime .

The suspect sustained gunshot wounds. The Orange County Fire Authority was requested to respond.
Orange County Fire Authority Engine #73 treated the suspect. Care Ambulance #299 also responded to
the scene and transported the suspect to U.C.I Medical Center. The suspect was pronounced deceased at
0855 hours at U.C.I. Medical Center. For further details of the suspect's injuries, refer to Detective
Launi's #1628 Supplemental-Report.
Several Santa Ana Police Officers responded to the scene and set up a crime scene perimeter using
yellow crime scene tape. Sergeant P. Craft #2979 arrived to the scene and assigned himself as the scene
supervisor. Detectives from the Santa Ana Police Department's Homicide Unit, Gang Unit, Family
Crimes Unit and Robbery Unit along with Investigators from the Orange County District Attorney 's
Office and Crime Scene Investigators from the Orange County Crime Lab were called to the scene to
investigate the incident.
Narrative:
Sunday: 06/23/13
0825 Hours
I was home when I was contacted by Sergeant Carrillo #2175 of the Santa Ana Police Department Gang
Unit. Sergeant Carrillo informed me of an Officer Involved Shooting and requested I assist with the
investigation.
1022 Hours
Sergeant Esparza #1598 briefed the assisting Detectives on the circumstances surrounding the Officer
Involved Shooting. Sergeant Esparza informed Detectives the shooting occurred in the east alley of 800
S. Townsend Street. Detective L. Rodriguez #2408 was designated as the case agent. I was assigned to
handle the crime scene.
1045 Hours
I arrived to the scene of the Officer Involved Shooting. I entered the scene from the south perimeter and
checked in with Officer Ribeiro #3224 who was maintaining a crime scene personnel log.

Sergeant Craft provided a briefing concerning the Officer Involved Shooting and the status of the initial
investigation by Patrol Officers. Present were Detectives from the Santa Ana Police Department's
Homicide Unit, Gang Unit, Family Crimes Unit and Robbery Unit along with Investigators from the
Orange County District Attorney's Office Shooting Team and members from the Orange County Crime
Lab.
Sergeant Craft advised us the address of the Officer Involved Shooting is the east alley of 805 S.
Townsend Street. The public safety statement given by Officers Ayala and Esquivel was that they fired
10 -12 gunshots in a northern direction and western direction into garage # 1. Approximately twenty
cartridge casings were located in the east alley of 805 S. Townsend Street. Officer Esquivel fired in a
northern direction. Officer Ayala fired in a western direction into garage #1.
Sergeant Craft told us Officers Ayala and Esquivel were conducting routine patrol in the east alley of
805 S. Townsend Str eet. They came upon the suspect and were invo lved in an Officer Inv olved
Shooting. The suspect fe ll to the ground. A toy replica handgun was found four feet away from the
suspect's body and a "loaded" syringe was found to be on her person. Two additional unidentified
subjects fled the scene . A perimeter was set and the two unidentified subjects were not located. The two
unidentified subjects were determined to be witnesses. Additional Officers arrived to the scene of the
shooting. Garage #1 was determined to be associated with the shooting. Officers entered garage #1 and
discovered no one was inside of the garage. A bullet hole was located going through closed garage door
#0 (garage door #0 is on the north side of the driveway . Following the numerical pattern of the garage
doors, it should be garage # 10). Officers entered garage #0 to confirm no one was inside of the garage.
Officers discovered no one to be inside the garage. Orange County Fire Authority Engine #73 responded
to the scene and provided medical tr eatment. Care Ambulance #299 also responded and transported the
suspect to U.C.I. M edical Center. The suspect was pronounced deceased at 0855 hours at U.C.I. Medical
Center.
Sergeant Craft concluded the briefing and walked us through the crime scene. I wa s paired with
Inv estigator D . Fulcher from the Orange County District Attorney 's Offi ce.
1305 Hours
Forensic Sc ientist F. Burke from the Orange County Crime Lab began the colle ction and remo val of
items of evid ence within the crime scene. Refer to Orange Cou nty Crime Lab 's forensic reports for a li st
and description of items collected under Forensic Report #13-48764.
1735 Hours
O range County Sheriff Foren sic Specialists concluded the collection of evidence within the crime sc ene
and security of the cr im e scen e was terminat ed.
