CORONER: 13-02615-BB On Sunday, June 23, 2013, at approximately 0830 hours, I spoke with Santa Ana Police Commander ERIC PAULSON who advised of an officer involved shooting, which occurred at 805 South Townsend Street, in the city of Santa Ana. Commander PAULSON requested the Orange County District Attorney’s Officer Involved Incident Investigation Team, respond to the location and conduct an investigation into the incident. I notified District Attorney Investigators DEAN FULCHER, BRETT ANDERSEN, LOREN DAWSON, KORY DEGRAFFENREID, ED WOOD, MIKE KENDRICK, and BOB ERICKSON and requested they respond to assist in the investigation. I went to the shooting location and met with personnel assigned to the incident. At approximately 1010 hours, Santa Ana Police Sergeant PHIL CRAFT conducted a briefing on the known circumstances surrounding the incident for personnel involved in the investigation. I learned the following from the briefing and preliminary investigation: ORANGE COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY’S OFFICE BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION PREFACE S.A. #13-015 Supervising Investigator: Mark Gutierrez Date of Report: 06/28/2013 Page 2 of 3 On June 20, 2013, at 1530 hours, JESSICA GONZALEZ confronted her ex-girlfriend and shot her three times with a .38 caliber revolver. Orange Police Department investigated the homicide and disseminated a “Wanted Flyer,” identifying GONZALEZ as being an armed and dangerous suspect in the homicide. On June 23, 2013, at 0807 hours, Santa Ana Police Officers GARY AYALA and SAUL ESQUIVAL contacted GONZALEZ in the east alley of 805 South Townsend Street, in the city of Santa Ana. AYALA and ESQUIVAL then broadcasted they had been involved in an officer involved shooting. Upon the arrival of additional Santa Ana Police units, officers found GONZALEZ lying in the alley, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the torso, and a grey replica pistol lying approximately three feet from her person. Santa Ana Police Sergeant PHIL CRAFT responded and obtained a joint public safety from both AYALA and ESQUIVAL. Sergeant CRAFT reported that both officers fired a total of approximately 10-12 rounds at GONZALEZ. Orange County Fire Authority firefighter/paramedics treated GONZALEZ and transported her to University of California, Irvine-Medical Center. At approximately 0855 hours, GONZALEZ was pronounced deceased.
