Sgt. Esparza briefed the Homicide Unit on the circumstances surrounding the officer involved shooting.
He advised us that a female suspect had been shot by officers and was pronounced deceased at UCI
Medical Center, Orange.
1050 hours
I, along with the Homicide Unit, arrived at the scene and checked in with Ofc. Ribeiro, who was
maintaining a crime scene personnel log.
Sgt. Craft provided a briefing of the incident. Investigators from the Orange County District Attorney's
Office and Sgt. Claborn from the Santa Ana Police Department's Professional Standards Unit, were also
present. After the briefing, I walked the scene with OCDA Inv. Dawson, who was the handling case
agent for the Orange County District Attorney's Office.
I noticed an open, single-car garage just west of where the shooting occurred. This garage faced north
and was assigned to the residents at I also saw another closed single-car garage,
just north of the first garage, that had sustained bullet damage as a result of the shooting. This particular
garage was assigned to the residents at
OCDA Inv. Dawson and I first contacted the residents in A male , identifying himself as
, came to the door. I confirmed that the open garage belonged to him and that he was the
resident in charge of the apartment. I explained to that we wanted to search the open garage in
connection with our investigation. was cooperative and signed a "consent to search" form.
We then contacted . confirmed she was the resident in charge of
this apartment and assigned the closed garage that had sustained the bullet damage. was
cooperative and signed a "consent to search" form for her garage in order for crime scene personnel to
gather any evidence from the shooting.
1210 hours
OCDA Inv. Dawson and I interviewed Sgt. Craft, the on-scene supervisor. The following is a brief
summary of our interview, which took place inside my assigned detective vehicle at the scene. Refer to
Inv. Dawson's audio recording for details.
Early this morning, Sgt. Craft was driving in the area of 400 N. Grand Avenue when he heard an officer
involved shooting occur in the area of 800 S. Townsend Street. He also heard that two other subjects
were involved in the incident but had fled. Sgt. Craft arrived at the east alley of 805 S. Townsend and
saw a subject lying on the ground in the middle of the alley. He walked up and discovered the subject
on the ground was a woman. He also observed blood underneath her and a replica handgun several feet
west. Several officers were also present and two officers had their handguns pointed at the female. Sgt.
Craft directed officers to handcuff the female, who appeared to be lifeless. Officers then cleared the
open garage and nearby vehicles.
Sgt. Craft directed officers to various crime scene duties. He noticed the female resembled a murder
suspect out of Orange PD. Earlier in roll call, a flyer regarding murder suspect, Jessica Gonzalez, had
been distributed and Sgt. Craft believed the female was one in the same . Paramedics arrived and began
treating the female. They requested officers remove the handcuffs. Sgt. Craft directed Ofc. Montiel to
accompany the female in the ambulance, on the way to the hospital.
