EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH AWARD – SEPTEMBER AND OCTOBER, 2008
David Madrid was present to receive the award for September.
Mary Carrion will attend the October meeting to accept her award.
SPECIAL SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY – AUGUST 2008
Two senior representatives were present to accept this award on behalf of Santa Ana
Towers.

1. SUMMER 2008 SUMMARY PRESENTATION
A PowerPoint slideshow was presented summarizing the Agency’s programs and
activities for the summer of 2008. Handout on file with the Recording Secretary for
review.
2. REQUEST FOR BOARD ACTION – AGREEMENT WITH ORANGE COUNTY
WATER DISTRICT
Motion:
Recommend to City Council to approve agreement with Orange County Water
District to install water monitoring wells at Fisher Park and Santiago Parks.

UPCOMING EVENTS
Calendars for October and November 2008 were reviewed and discussed. Events of
note:
October 5: Youth Expo at Santa Ana College beginning at 11:00 a.m.
November 4: General Elections
November 5: Remove Parks, Recreation, Education and Youth Council
Committee meeting from calendar.
November 9: East LA Classic Theater “Much Ado About Nothing, Mariachi Style”
at Santa Aha High School, free admission.

STATUS/UPDATES
1. COMMITTEE ON FIELD USE (CoFU)
Committee did not meet, but congratulations to Reservations Team regarding the
Los Angeles Times article regarding Santa Ana’s progress on field usage.
2. OPEN SPACE COMMITTEE
No report.
3. EVENTS AND PROGRAMS COMMITTEE
Citywide Employee Picnic went very well. The Agency received some Employee
Quality Service Awards for the KaBOOM! Playground Build, fundraising for Tierra de
Las Pampas, Seniors on the Go program and the Contract Administration process.
Fiestas Patrias was very well attended. Santa Ana Business Expo was a great
success. The Tom Lamere dedication went well. Youth Expo should be a great
event.
4. COMMUNITY CONTACT REPORTS AND UPDATES
Reviewed and discussed.
5. CABLE UPDATES
Time Warner conducted annual cable theft study. Provider is working on
improving system to deter cable theft.
Time Warner currently has 20,514 subscribers in Santa Ana and customer
service is at 73%. AT&T currently has 800 subscribers in Santa Ana, however
no customer service statistics have been gathered as of yet.
The Candidates Forum is scheduled for September 25, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. and
will be aired live.
Obtained a new public service announcement on Lifelong Literacy.
New spots for CCN have been filmed and are being edited. Segments are the
new Santiago Wildlife and Watershed Center, the Central City Neighborhood
Association, Solar Green, and the Bristol Street Widening.
Be sure to visit the Dia de Los Muertos events at the Artists Village on November
1st.

G. Mouet
Staff will do a presentation on Agency Special Events at the October meeting.
R. Ono
Working with SAUSD on various items. The Willard Joint Use proposal has been
presented and being considered.
Bids have been opened for the Jerome Center Renovation. Awards are
scheduled for the October 6, 2008 Council Meeting.
The City will be entering into ten-year agreements with SAUSD for Angels Park
and the Machander Tennis Center at First and Flower.

Attended the Carrousel opening at the Zoo.
Four year old daughter is participant of the Matchpoint Tennis Academy at
Cabrillo Tennis Center.

Glad to see the Twist-Basler House completely moved.
Shared info about “Trick or Treat so Kids Can Eat”, put on by the Thespian
Society at Orange County High School of the Arts.

Will be sending pictures of Cabrillo Park parking lot to Parks Superintendent for
consideration of adding trees to site.
Requested update on status of new trash cans. Staff advised they are being
ordered and designs are being developed for both “trash” and “recycle”
receptacles in English and Spanish.
Received complaint about the condition of the bathrooms at the stadium during
the Mater Dei vs. Centennial game. Staff indicated that there were 9,000
spectators in attendance, so the bathrooms were heavily used.

Thanks for having me!
Inquired as to how Cable Updates relates to the Board of Recreation and Parks.
Staff explained the previous existence of a Cable Board, which has been
dissolved and incorporated into the Board of Recreation and Parks.
Inquired if fees obtained for advertising on the stadium scoreboard remain with
the stadium. Staff provided response.
Reported ivy growing over a mural at Griset Park. Staff explained that at a
previous Joint Policy Meeting, the school district had approved the planting of the
ivy to deter vandalism of the mural.

Welcome Mr. Hills
There was a Youth Expo workshop on September 20 where attendees
brainstormed ideas for the letter being composed to the presidential candidates.
The meeting was lead by a great consultant.

Wednesday, October 22, 2008 in the second floor conference room of the Parks,
Recreation and Community Services administration building, located at 888 W. Santa
Ana Blvd., Santa Ana, CA.
