SPECIAL SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY – NOVEMBER 2008 Dr. Ana Jimenez from the Orange County Children’s Therapeutic Arts Center was present to accept this award. CONSENT CALENDAR MOTION: W. MINUTES Approve Minutes of Regular Meeting held on October 22, 2008 with the following correction: Page 4, Board Comments, J. Acosta should read J. Stroud. Student Representative Jonathan Espinoza was excused. ** END OF CONSENT CALENDAR ** BUSINESS CALENDAR NEW BUSINESS 1. ATHLETIC FIELD RESERVATION POLICIES AND PROCEDURES UPDATE A PowerPoint presentation was made by staff summarizing the revisions made to these policies and procedures, which will go into effect January 1, 2009. Handouts on file with the Recording Secretary for review. 2. REQUEST FOR BOARD ACTION – THORNTON PARK T-MOBILE CELL TOWER Motion to recommend to City Council to approve a lease agreement with Omnipoint Communications (T-Mobile) for cellular equipment building and a sports lighting monopole cell tower at Thornton Park. PARK MAINTENANCE UPDATE PowerPoint presentation made by staff, handouts on file with Recording Secretary for review. 5. NOMINATIONS FOR SPECIAL SERVICE AWARD TO THE YOUTH AND COMMUNTIY OF SANTA ANA Motion made to recognize Toyama Karate-Do for their continued volunteerism at Agency events. MOTION: J. Stroud SECOND: W. Events of note: December 13: Children’s Winter Holiday Party at the Zoo from 10am – 1pm. December 17: Board Holiday Party at the home of G. Mouet. December 19: Tierra de las Pampas Groundbreaking at the Zoo, 4pm. F. Acosta left at 7:30 p.m. STATUS/UPDATES 1. COMMITTEE ON FIELD USE (CoFU) Various violations discussed and team/player suspensions reviewed. Two teams have been permanently banned from play on Santa Ana facilities. 2. OPEN SPACE COMMITTEE Resolution for the Forest Paul site is currently on hold. Geotechnical studies being done for the water well sites at Fisher and Santiago parks. The TKO Boxing program has been moved to Carr Intermediate due to the closure of Jerome Center for renovation. Future cell tower site at Rosita Park being reviewed. Prop 84 grant resolution has been submitted for improvements to Santiago Creek, a partnership with Discovery Science Center, who will provide programming at the lower end of the creek. 3. EVENTS AND PROGRAMS COMMITTEE Boo at the Zoo events were a great success with over 4,200 attendees. Much Ado About Nothing at Santa Ana High School was also a great success. Upcoming events are the Senior Talent Show on December 5th, the Children’s Winter Holiday Party at the Zoo on December 13th, and the Tierra de las Pampas Groundbreaking at the Zoo on December 19th. 4. COMMUNITY CONTACT REPORTS AND UPDATES No discussion. 5. PENDING ITEMS/ACTION ITEMS FOR FUTURE MEETINGS State Park Bond Project Concepts (January, 2009) Founders’ Day October 3, 2009 (Future) Event Banners (Future) COMMENTS PUBLIC COMMENTS No public present. Martinez Reminder - the Board will have a brief meeting at the Agency’s Headquarters building at 5:30 on December 17th, with the holiday party to follow at the home of G. Mouet. BOARD/STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE COMMENTS D. Orea Regarding permanent team/player soccer suspensions – are other leagues advised so as not to accept their applications to join new leagues/teams? Staff advised that yes, player cards and information are taken and documented. J. Stroud Would like to see a banner promoting Agency events at City Place (corner of Main and Memory Lane). M. Madrid Things are looking really bad for Toys for Tots this year due to the economy and requests for toys will be cut by half. Requesting organizations will also be further reviewed to determine true needs. Organizations are being urged to seek alternate methods for obtaining toys and to not rely solely on Toys for Tots. W. Tobiska OCHSA’s Thespian Society is having a fundraiser at Barnes and Noble at the Irvine Marketplace on Saturday, November 22nd. Please come out and support us! K.
