LOCATION: SANTA ANA POLICE DEPARTMENT
On the listed date and time, Santa Ana Police Detective JULIAN RODRIGUEZ and I
conducted an audio digital recorded interview of in reference to the officer
involved shooting of HANS KEVIN ARELLANO. The following is a summary of the interview:
On July 30, 2013, at approximately 1400 hours, was in the area of Harbor
Boulevard and McFadden Avenue waiting for a ride from his girlfriend. As was walking
into the McDonalds Restaurant, he was confronted by ARELLANO. ARELLANO appeared
agitated, standing within inches of ’s face. ARELLANO demanded to know what
was doing in the area. When said he was waiting for his girlfriend, ARELLANO stated,
“You better be,” and walked away. felt threatened by ARELLANO and assumed he was
under the influence of some kind of “drugs.”
A short time later, was standing on the east side of the China King restaurant,
624 South Harbor Boulevard, smoking a cigarette when he heard a police siren. As

turned toward the sound of the siren, he saw ARELLANO running east through the south
parking lot, followed by a Santa Ana Police car. heard the police officer in the vehicle
order ARELLANO to “stop” over the vehicle public address system. As ARELLANO passed,
heard him state “Fuck that.”
As ARELLANO ran past the China King restaurant, he changed direction running north
toward Jugo’s La Tropicana, 622 South Harbor Boulevard. lost sight of ARELLANO after
he rounded the corner of the building westbound. The Santa Ana Police vehicle came to a stop
at the same corner of the building. A female police officer exited the vehicle and yelled, “Stop.”
heard what he believed to be one gunshot, but did not see anyone fire a weapon.
