AWARDS FOR OUTSTANDING HISTORIC PRESERVATION PROJECTS Filed by the City of Santa Ana to recognize outstanding achievement in the area of Merit: RECOMMENDATION: Recommend that the City Council announce the Outstanding Historic Preservation Projects. Vice Chairman Jeff Dickman and Associate Planner Hally Soboleske presented certificates to the Award of Merit Recipients: Mary Garcia, Floral Park Neighborhood Association, Paul Cook-Giles, and Wilshire Square Neighborhood Association. MOTION: Recommend that the City Council announce the Outstanding Historic Preservation Projects. MOTION: O'Callaghan SECOND: Mill VOTE: AYES: Bustamante, Dickman, O'Callaghan, Mill, Rogers, Stroud (6) NOES: None (0) ABSENT: Chinn, Schaefer, Seeley (3) ABSTAIN: None (0) Awards of Merit: Local History Book: Santa Ana's Logan Barrio -Its History, Stories, and Families ' Mary Garcia, author Description: Published in late 2007, this book describes the birth and growth of Logan Barrio, one of Santa Ana's earliest Hispanic neighborhoods. Floral Park Neighborhood Home Tour Floral Park Neighborhood Association Description: This year, the Floral Park Neighborhood Home Association will be holding their 16~h Annual Home and Garden Tour. The tour brings thousands of people to Santa Ana to view our city, as well as offer a wondertul and entertaining afternoon that includes an antique auto show, collectibles sale, and refreshments. Paul Cook-Giles Description: Paul Cook-Giles has long supported historic preservation in the City of Santa Ana, and has given much of his time and energy towards this program on all levels. Paul has served on the Historic Resources Commission, is a member of the Santa Ana Historical Preservation Society, as well as the proud owner of the Claycomb House - a home which he helped restore over the past few years. ' Wilshire Square Garden Tea Wilshire Square Neighborhood Association Description: The garden tea promotes a historically sensitive area that exhibits the lovely architecture and landscape in the neighborhood. PUBLIC HFORINr:R PUBLIC HEARINGS by Historic Resources May i, 2008 to June 5, 2008) Filed by the City of Santa Ana, to place and categorize as Contributive, the structure at 2018 North Greenleaf Street (Wahlberg House) on the Santa Ana Register of Historical Properties. PUBLISHED IN THE ORANGE COUNTY REPORTER: May 23, 2008 PUBLICLY NOTICED: May 23, 2008 RECOMMENDATION: Adopt a resolution denying Historic Resources Commission Application No. 2008-13. Associated Planner Holly Soboleske presented the staff report and recommendation. Public Hearing re-opened. Commissioner Bustamante stated he reviewed the audio tape from the Historic Resources Commission meeting held on May 1, 2008. Cynthia Ward, Jon von Szeliski and Barton A. Beach spoke in support of categorization and placement on the Historical Register. Public Hearing closed. ' MOTION: Adopt a resolution approving Historic Resources Commission Application No. 2008-13 and Historic Register Categorization No. 2008-13. The Historic Resources Commission changed the categorization from "Contributive" to "Key" because of the structure's association with Harold Wahlberg, a pioneer in the avocado-growing industry. Historic Resources Commission Comments Commissioner Mill • Commended the book, "Santa Ana's Logan Barrio -Its History, Stories, and ' Families" by Mary Garcia for its historical significance. Commissioner O'Callaghan • Recommended a study session regarding stucco finishes. Commissioner Stroud • Commented on the Twist-Basler House at Cabrillo Park. • Inquired about Michael Seeley's resignation. Planning Manager Haluza provided information.
