RECOMMENDED ACTION
Renew the contract with Brodart Company for library cataloging and purchase of books and
materials for a one-year period in the amount not to exceed $285,000.
DISCUSSION
The Library provides adult and youth programs to 133,160 card holders annually. Currently,
state and federal grants through the Public Library Funds (PLF) program covers 50 percent of
the purchase of books and materials. The remaining 50 percent -- along with costs for supplies,
cataloging and processing -- is charged to the General Fund. Approximately 20,000 books and
materials are purchased yearly, including a Spanish concentration of 25 percent. Brodart offers
a wide selection of materials in children, young adult and general adult categories. Of the
20,278 items purchased last year, 8,591 were purchased for Adult Services, 9,629 for Youth
Services, and 2,058 for Young Adult Services. Brodart supplies fiction, nonfiction, audio and
video materials in English and Spanish. Brodart bar codes and catalogues all items in the
Library database, facilitating prompt entry into circulation of materials delivered to the Library.
On January 2, 2007, the City Council awarded a contract to Brodart for a one-year period with
provision for four, one-year renewals. The vendor has performed satisfactorily during the past
contract period and staff recommends the fourth renewal of the contract.
