The waterfowl habitat improvements will recreate ecological conditions conducive to the nesting of waterfowl currently at the site. The project also includes a new decomposed granite trail, passive seating, interpretive graphics, automatic irrigation system modifications and riparian planting. The Thornton Park Wetlands Restoration Project is Phase II of the Cienega de las Ranas improvements, an effort to recreate the historic ecological conditions of the site (Exhibit 1). The project will enhance the freshwater marsh habitat east of the lake, and connect the flood control channel to the lake with a band of native wetland and riparian planting. As part of this project, the nonnative exotic grasses will be removed. Native plants, as well as plant and wildlife interpretive signage will also be installed. Once completed, both projects will raise native habitat awareness and enhance the aesthetics of these parks. 23A-1 Contract Award For Centennial Park Waterfowl Sanctuary And Thornton Park Wetlands Restoration August 20, 2012 Page 2 Both projects are funded by the Habitat Conservation Fund Program which was established under the California Wildlife Protection Act of 1990 and provides grant funds for enhancement and restoration of riparian habitats throughout the State.
