Subject: 5/20/14 City Council Meeting I Urge you to fund South Main Corridor 5 Year Strategic Plan
Dear Honorable Mayor Pulido, Mayor Pro Tern Tinajero, and Council Members,
I urge you to fund the South Main Corridor 5 Year Strategic Plan.
The South Main Corridor is the gateway into our city from Orange County's John Wayne Airport and from
recently built residential developments at West MacArthur and South Main Street, i.e. The Skyline at
MacArthur Place, The Marke Apartments, and the Pinnacle at MacArthur Place.
The South Main Corridor has no cohesive "branding" as a desirable area to draw the residents or visitors for
shopping, dining, or recreation. South Main Street has a run down appearance. The South Main Corridor does
not provide an attractive package for Santa Ana's Economic Development Division to encourage stores to relocate or invest.
The South Main Corridor screams "run down ", "unsafe" and "undesirable" to the first time visitor. The South
Main Corridor is plagued with commercial code enforcement violations: i.e.illegal or excessive or non - existent signage, shops
displaying their wares on the sidewalks and facades with peeling paint. Graffiti abatement is a daily challenge. There is a shortage of

adequate parking spaces. There are challenges to business licensing with multiple businesses operating from the same
building. Merchants who are leasing have landlords who have not upgraded or properly maintained their facades.
As a resident and Past President of Wilshire Square Neighborhood that borders South Main Street I have safety
concerns with the proximity of South Main Street to my home and I am concerned how it negatively impacts
our property values. I rarely shop on South Main St. I am concerned with my personal safety when I stop at
CVS or McDonalds or Wells Fargo Bank at South Main and Warner Ave. due to the loitering of clients of the
Mental Health Center located nearby.
As a Past Board Member of the Santa Ana Merchants' Association, I know how disheartened the South Main
Merchants' were when Governor Brown seized the State's Redevelopment funds from California cities during
the State's budget crisis.
I was also privileged several years ago, as a Board Member of the Santa Ana Merchants' Association, to take
notes during a meeting with Councilman Sarmiento, the Executive Board of the Santa Ana Merchants'
Association and the Redevelopment Agency to discuss the significance of legal decision of 30 years ago that
protected funds assessed for the South Main Corridor's redevelopment to be used exclusively on the South Main
Corridor.
I urge you to fund the South Main Corridor's 5 Year Strategic Plan without delay.
Sincerely,
Mary M. Guzman (
