Yes, you are so correct. No way PD and FD can combat this out of control environment. I have my in-laws in a their 90's, one who uses a walker and we had to use our camping gear to provide light! Many seniors might not have that support! I too will bring this up to the board and association, there has to be changes... It's only getting worse! We even had a meeting regarding firework safety... The neighbors who came are responsible and caring. It's those folks who have no consideration or care of consequences for damages to others that we must cancel or change to eliminate fireworks. It's unfortunate, but our police and fire services cannot stop the thousands illegal fireworks... Not enough personnel and hard to pin them down! Sorry for the long response, but I am in agreement with you. Many thanks and best to all Irma Jauregui Sent from my iPhonec On Jul 6, 2015, at 6:18 PM, Tim Rush <timrushna bhhscapro sn com> wrote: All; As some of you know Cherie Kerr who lives on Heliotrope Drive in Floral Park experienced the nightmare of having the trees set ablaze next to her home on July 4a'. This directly caused by an illegal bottle rocket that was launched to celebrate the Independence Day event. The fire department was dispatched, and neighbors pounded on her door to alert her to the fact that embers were falling on her home. She said both firemen and police said "in just a few more minutes your entire house could have been in flames...." Yes, we all know bottle rockets are illegal as are all the M -80's, M -160's etc. that are discharged in our city. But "Safe & Sane" fireworks are simply the gateway drug that gives cover to all the illegal firecrackers. When I arrived home about 11;15pm many of the houses were still setting CCM 7/7/2015 off fireworks. And I listened to the explosions until 3am. When is enough, enough? The illegal fireworks started over a month prior to the actual holiday.....and were still going off yesterday. I encourage each of you to consider taking the leadership position to not wait until a child is maimed or killed, or an adult or homes burn down to DO something about this terrible problem. Let's be far sighted enough to say "we have tried this fireworks experiment in Santa Ana, and it is time for change!" Let's rid our neighborhoods of this problem and ban the sale of fireworks period. Folks will still consume hot dogs, and hamburgers and eat apple pie. Enough people have demonstrated that they cannot abide by the rules. All of the money that is raised by the non profits.....guess what? The 28 cities who don't allow the sale of fireworks, somehow they survive financially. Perhaps offer a phase in ....... no sales except on July 4b for the next two years and then, an outright ban. It will give everyone a chance to plan a new fund raising strategy. The continued bad behavior of those who choose to discharge illegal fireworks and the expense of additional police and fire, not to mention the damage to property and human life ........ is not worth it. We could afford to write a check to the non profits and still be money ahead. It is time to say enough to all fireworks both Sane & INSANE. Thanks for your consideration. It happened to happen in the 4th. It happened to happen while fireworks were being used. But it didn't happen because one was lit and burned down his house while he was innocently sleeping in his bed. Please reconsider the timing. Because our city allows the sale and use of fireworks, this practice has been abused by the use of illegal fireworks. It's been well documented that the unsupervised used of fireworks causes, fires, injuries. Lately our city has experience on 4th of July a war -zone like atmosphere. There is literally smoke everywhere and driving is a challenge because one fears to be attack and set on fire by fireworks. Also, we as citizens have the right to quiet enjoyment in our homes, this cannot happen when fireworks both legal but mostly illegal go off during all hours of the day and night, even a few weeks prior to 4th of July and well after it. Please, support a moratorium to ban the sale of fireworks in our city. Nonprofit organizations can do other events to raise money, like selling Christmas trees. This must be done ASAP. You ask why? Aside from the fact that many of our hard working residents are being deprived of good sound sleep days before and days after the 4th of July....... Because it's dangerous Fireworks can and have, caused bodily harm, due to errant fireworks. My friend lost one eye several years ago, and I have never forgotten that. Fireworks cause property damage to parked automobiles, landscape and buildings, etc. We need forward motion to take action now and prevent a major disaster. The Drought presents an even more serious situation waiting to happen. Dry foliage,m dry trees are awaiting that spark to ignite. And the water situation does not help. There are numerous venues offering large displays of fireworks under safe and controlled conditions.
