Subject: City Council Agenda item regarding Mater Dei Parking structure, Council meeting 6/7/16
Dear Mayor & Council;
For the record I am neither Catholic or an alum of Mater Dei. Our children attended Lutheran schools including Orange
Lutheran. That said, I well remember when there were a lot of rumblings about the very great possibility of Mater Dei
moving out of town for a variety of reasons. Due to the work of the then City Manager and Council with a joint
collaboration with the school they embarked upon a very expensive and grand remodeling and expansion of the
school. Everyone knew that one day this parking garage would need to be built both to accommodate the school and
the nearby residents.
It only seems fair that the city do its part in assisting to finish this project and keeping this valuable asset in town. Think
of the accolades that come to us via the great success of this institution! Mater Dei has a national reputation and is on
the cutting edge of in so many areas that benefit all of our residents, not just the student body. Given the indirect
student aid that is given to many Santa Ana students, and the tremendous positive financial impact that this school
facility has on our city it seems reasonable that we should make good on our "end of the bargain". The school has in
good faith moved forward to make many substantial improvements to their facility which not only benefit them but the
surrounding area, both business' and residential property values.
When it comes to money there are always more places to spend it and there are dollars. That is when your careful
leadership is most in play. Thanks for your consideration, and I hope you vote to assist Mater Dei.
Sincerely,
Tim Rush

Subject: Please Support Mater Dei High School
Dear Mayor Pulido and Members of the City Council:
My name is Sadie Blanco and I have been a resident of Santa Ana for 14 years. I am also a current Junior at
Mater Dei High School. I will be attending the next City Council Meeting where the issue 65B regarding Mater
Dei High school will be continued, but I still wanted to share my thoughts and recommendation.
Being as I live two miles from Mater Dei High School, I have always noticed how the school stood out in the
neighborhood. Mater Dei's choice to stay in this city has been the greatest opportunity for myself and the
residents who live nearby. Founded in 1950, the school has dedicated so much of its time and money to raise the
excellence of which Santa Ana is known for.
I am proud of my school and the administration for their continued efforts in developing a Center of Education
that directly reflects the City of Santa Ana. This reflection shows excellence and poise for both the City and its
residents.
I commend Mater Dei's steadfast help for families in Santa Ana to give them the opportunity of attending the
school through their outstanding Tuition Assistance ,Program.
I commend the City of Santa Ana for its cooperation with Mater Dei in widening Bristol St., addressing various
neighborhood parking issues, and constructing new facilities and playing fields which have transformed the
Mater Dei Campus into something the neighborhood can take pride in.
As we continue expanding the Mater Dei Campus, I encourage the City of Santa Ana to guarantee the funding
of the Agreement Appendix that was previously set. I am confident that you and the Members of the City
Council will determine the best way to fulfill your commitment for the common good of the people of Santa
Ana.
With best regards,
Sadie Blanco

65A MATER DEI APPENDIX ANALYSIS AND UPDATE
Mayor and City Council members,
I am not in favor of giving Mater Dei S2.5M from our city budget.
In April and May, the city held 6 community budget meetings to present and discuss the city's 2016/17
proposed budget to residents of Santa Ana, and $2.5M of city funds for Mater Dei was never presented or
discussed at these community budget meetings.
I therefore ask you to vote for either option C or D.
Lastly, the document provided by Meter Dei lists several organizations that have and may directly benefit from
future use of Mater Dei facilities.
On page 65A-10 it lists KidWorks as a recipient of Mater Dei volunteer services, and page 65A-13 states
KidWorks could directly benefit from the future use of the Mater Dei Performing Arts Center.
Council Member David Benavides is currently an Executive Director of KidWorks. Because KidWorks directly
benefits from Mater Dei, I believe this will be a conflict of interest, and respectfully request Councilmember
Benavides recuse himself from voting on item 65A.
Kind regards,
Chris Schmidt
