I believe our citizens and our businesses are our greatest assets and we must protect them, especially in this political climate of uncertainty. That is why I do not begrudge the P.D. having been given handsome raises and benefits. However with that said, it strikes me that by only recognizing the importance of the of Police, over all the other Civil Servants the city employs, is a message that says "We see this city as crime latent and that is our only 1 priority." It is most certainly an important one, but there is only a small percentage of the citizens that ever even have contact with the police. It is the staff in Housing that helps the needy get into homes, it is the Finance Department that ensures grants are being properly administrated and financially sound, it is the Public Works Department that fills those potholes, responds to downed power lines, it is the staff at the Work Center that helps people get back to work and helps employers find staff so their businesses can grow. It is the Planning Department that provides the permits to help businesses and home owners with their building needs, it is the Water Department that collects the utilities for the city, it is Economic Development Deparment that works to attract businesses, to help them grow and stay in our city. I could go on, but the bottom line is almost every citizen in the city has some contact and gets help from these Civil Servants, and who are these Civil Servants, they are SEIU! By not treating our brothers and sisters as fairly as you have other work units, you are essentially saying, "I do not care about the needs of Average Joe Citizen." Is that the image you want to project to your constituents? Thank You Dora Holguin Proud Civil Servant and Local SEIU 721 Member 2
