My name is Brennan Sizemore and my colleague Tho Tran who are here tonight are financial educators at WFG/WSB office at 1221 Dyer Road, Santa Ana. The reason I am here today is to share with you about our National Campaign for Financial Literacy to have 1 million financially educated families by 2020. As you may know, April is Financial Literacy Month which was recognized in 2004 by Senate resolution 316 "to raise public awareness about the importance of financial education and the serious consequences that may be associated with a lack of understanding about personal finances. This resolution was an effort to highlight the importance of financial literacy and teach Americans how to establish & maintain healthy financial habits. As of today, these principles are still relevant. "According to recent survey, North Americans are facing serious challenges. The US picture is even gloomier. • 33%, or more than 77 millions of Americans don't pay their bills on time. • 39% carry credit card debt from month to month. • Only 59% of adults say they have savings. Every day, 10,000 of Americans turn 65. Many of them did not prepare enough for retirement. The good old days of pensions are disappearing and government programs such as social security are under threat. The cost of housing, living expenses and health care are close to unaffordable for most. A family of four with an annual income of $84,450 or less now qualifies as low income in Orange County. After two severe recessions in 2001 and 2008, the first decade of the millennium was a lost decade for so many families. Although the U.S economy is recovering, the aftermath continues. What you see with the market this week is also unsettling and many of us are not educated on what to do. Nobody teaches us how to manage our money in school. Financial issues are not often discussed, and financial products not always explained. Most people have trouble reading a financial statement. We use credit cards every day and don't always understand the hidden charges. We buy insurance policies and stick them in a filing cabinet. We contribute to our retirement accounts and hope someone will take care of it. Our organization, WSB has helped some of the most underserved communities across North America. We provide free financial classes by experienced and certified instructors. My family has benefited greatly from the campaign and so my wife here tonight and I are passionate advocates of this cause. Most importantly, I would like to invite the City to join our campaign and help us in our cause by allowing us to bring these classes to Santa Ana residents in libraries, community centers and schools and have these classes posted in the resident's bulletin. These will help achieve your city's Strategic Flan Goal number 5 of Community Financial Health, Livability, Engagement & Sustainability. In closing, I would like to read a comment from Governor Jerry Brown last April in support of Financial Literacy: "Let us all take time to increase our knowledge of our finances and encourage our friends and family to do the same. I encourage Californians to take advantage of the free resources including seminars and workshops, classroom presentations, online services and educational materials — and learn how to better manage money, investments, credit and debt and avoid financial scams and fraud." "By empowering Californians with the knowledge and tools they need to help them make critical decisions, including financing higher education, buying a home, starting a business and saving for retirement, we are investing in a brighter and more successful future."
