<br />Landscape Architectural Design for Sth & Lacy Park - RFP No. 18.038 
<br />5-acre park in Cathedral City. Working closely with 
<br />the city appointed grant writer, DEA developed a 
<br />plan for active recreation facilities while considering 
<br />the incorporation of sustainable features such as 
<br />recycled materials, the use of decorative rock and 
<br />decomposed granite, 'Smart Irrigation' techniques, 
<br />and drought tolerant plant material. The park features 
<br />playground and picnic areas, walking paths, a ball 
<br />field with soccer field overlay, skatepark, parking, 
<br />plaza space and picnic shelters, in addition to fitness 
<br />stations, a restroom, lighting and signage.

<br />The monument 
<br />sign resembled a 
<br />large caterpillar, 
<br />shade canopies 
<br />were shaped like 
<br />large butterflies, 
<br />and a community 
<br />stage was modeled after a caterpillar -eaten leaf. 
<br />Plantings consisted of drought tolerant California 
<br />native plants and were designed to become habitat 
<br />for a wide variety of native California butterflies. To 
<br />educate visitors to the park on the butterfly habitat, 
<br />informational kiosks were positioned at key points 
<br />along gravel pathways. In addition to creating native 
<br />plant and butterfly habitat, DEA landscape architects 
<br />also assisted in developing "green" strategies. 
<br />Permeable pavers were used in parking areas 
<br />to facilitate water percolation, on -site leach fields 
<br />dispersed water from the children's water play area 
<br />into surrounding turf areas, and recycled materials 
<br />were used for park amenities such as picnic tables, 
<br />benches and trash receptacles.

<br />Marshall Community Park, San Gabriel,

<br />Community Park, a 
<br />2.4-acre park to be 
<br />constructed on the 
<br />Marshall Elementary School site. DEA developed 
<br />a plan at this joint -use site for active recreation 
<br />facilities incorporating sustainable features such as 
<br />a synthetic turf sports field, drought tolerant plant 
<br />material, "Smart Irrigation" equipment for water 
<br />conservation, and recycled materials for paving and 
<br />site furnishings, while still maintaining state -required 
<br />standards for elementary school outdoor play. The 
<br />site features include many active amenities such 
<br />as playground and picnic areas, walking paths, 
<br />a baseball/softball field with soccer field overlay, 
<br />a basketball court, a handball court, standard 
<br />school ground court activities, and fitness stations, 
<br />The passive amenities include an educational 
<br />demonstration garden, picnic shelters, a restroom, 
<br />lighting and signage, decorative fencing, an 
<br />educational/community history mural wall, on -street 
<br />parking and new street frontage landscape.
