CALIFORNIA COMMERCIAL ®RIVER LICENSE REQUIREMENTS <br />A commercial driver license is a license issued in accordance with Federal Regulations that allows an <br />individual to operate a commercial vehicle. <br />You must be at least 21 years old to drive a commercial vehicle across state lines (interstate <br />commerce) or to transport passengers or hazardous materials or wastes (intrastate or interstate <br />commerce). You may drive for hire within California if you are 18 years of age or older and do not <br />engage in interstate commerce activities. If you are 16 years of age but less than 18 years of age, you <br />may not drive for hire and you may not drive outside of California. (VC &12515J fVC 612516) <br />You must complete and submit the following documents and submit to DMV office to apply for a CLP <br />(commercial learner's permit). <br />Provide proof of a valid social security card. <br />Verify your identity. <br />Submit proof of residency documents. <br />Pay a non-refundable application fee to the DMV. <br />Give a fingerprint scan. (DMV office) <br />10 Year History Record Check <br />The Motor Carrier Safety Improvement Act of 1999, and applicable Federal Regulations requires all <br />commercial driver license applicants including renewal applications to disclose whether he or she <br />has been issued a driver license in the same or different name to operate any type of motor vehicle <br />in another state or other jurisdiction within the previous ten years. If the answer is "Yes" to the ten <br />year history record question, a 10 Year History Record Check form (DL 939) complete and submitted <br />with the Commercial Driver License Application https://www.edl.dmv.ca.gov/. <br />Medical report for commercial driver license (CDL) <br />A medical form completed by a U. S. licensed doctor of medicine (M.D.), osteopathy (D.O.), licensed <br />physician assistant (P.A.), a nurse practitioner (N.P.), advance practice nurse, or chiropractor who is <br />clinically competent to perform the medical examination, must be given to the DMV with your original <br />application for a driver license or instruction permit. The medical form must be dated within the last 2 years <br />and on a form approved by the Federal Highway Administration, the Federal Aviation Administration, <br />DMV, or on the DMV Report of Medical Examination Report form Medical Examination Report fDL <br />MCSA 5875). <br />Effective October 1, 2004, DMV will accept only a Medical Examination Report (MCSA 5872 with a <br />revision date of 2/2004 or later, or a current medical form (containing the new blood pressure <br />guidelines) approved by the Federal Highway Administration or the Federal Aviation Administration. <br />California Vehicle Code (CVC) Section 12517.2(a) requires all applicants for an original or any <br />renewal of a certificate(s) to drive a school bus, school pupil activity bus, youth bus, general public <br />para-transit vehicle or farm labor vehicle to submit a report of a medical examination, completed by <br />a physician (MD) licensed to a practice medicine (doctor of osteopathy [DO] is acceptable). The report <br />of medical examination must be submitted upon application and every two years thereafter. CVC <br />Section 12517.2(b) requires all school bus drivers within the same month of reaching the age of 65 <br />to submit an acceptable medical report on a yearly basis. <br />311 Page -California Truck Driving Academy - Student Catalog <br />
