STATEMENT OF QUALIFICATIONS <br />UNDERSTANDING OF NEED <br />Suggestions/Special Concerns— We're just coming into this <br />project so we still have a lot of catching up to do. The City and <br />it's Staff has been dealing with the site for a long time so we <br />don't know exactly what your preferences are regarding certain <br />types of irrigation or certain products. We make the following <br />suggestions / raise the following concerns based soley on what <br />we observed during our site walk and our more than twenty <br />years of designing irrigation systems in Southern California. <br />Based on the latest state requirements for irrigation we <br />mostly specify rotator nozzles instead of traditional rotors <br />and spray heads. These are more efficient getting water <br />down, losing less as mist and overspray. They also require <br />less water use as they lower GPM output, They may not <br />have the radius throws required in the largest turf areas on <br />the site but we would suggest these be considered where <br />possible. <br />The RFP doesn't list Irrigation Demolition as the expected <br />sheet list but if we were awarded this project we would <br />include separate irrigation demolition sheets showing in <br />detail the extent of removal for existing mainline, valves, <br />laterals, heads, etc. This will give the contractor accurate <br />quantity take -offs and make it clear that special handling <br />will be required for the removal and disposal of the existing <br />transite pipe mainline. <br />We would recommend installing a Two -Wire System and <br />Controller. This will make installation easier as there will <br />only be one conduit run to make into the existing structure <br />and new controller location. We won't have to run wires <br />from each valve location back to that spot. A Two -Wire <br />system will also make it easier to expand the controller <br />chart in the future. While it may not seem critical now, it <br />is easy to see a future here in California where water is <br />even more scarce and Cities all around will need to reduce <br />the amount of lawn they are watering. Going to a two -wire <br />system now gives you ultimate flexibility down the road <br />when it becomes politically necessary to convert some <br />of the large lawn areas in the park to native shrubs and <br />groundcovers. <br />Based on the "ZONE IRRIGAITON MAP" provided in <br />the RFP, there is a purple spray zone around the fitness <br />area that does not currently exist. We viewed this area <br />during our site walk and that landscape area will need to <br />be defined by these drawings and appropriate planting and <br />irrigation designed. <br />The existing parking lot landscape areas will be a challenge <br />for installation of new irrigation. There is well established <br />palm and shrub plantings throughout that look to have <br />"naturalized" to the site. These would be areas where <br />we'd look to preserve any existing irrigation where possible <br />since trenching in and around these tight locations could <br />damage existing plant material. <br />WN <br />CITY OF SANTA ANA: RFP NO: 28 128 <br />CABRILLO PARK IRRIGATION RESTORATION <br />
