Santiago Street) <br />RECOMMENDED ACTION <br />Adopt a resolution approving a Certificate of Appropriateness for Historic Exterior <br />Modification Application No. 2022-04. <br />EXECUTIVE SUMMARY <br />Michelle Helvig is requesting approval of Historic Exterior Modification Application (HEMA) <br />No. 2022-04 to allow exterior modifications consisting of reconfiguration of the east (rear) <br />elevation to include three new double-hung windows and two new French doors, interior <br />remodel, and the removal of a window from the south elevation, for the Burkett House <br />located at 2311 N. Santiago Street. The property was listed as “Contributive” in 2021. <br />DISCUSSION <br />Project Location and Site Description <br />The subject property is located on the east side of Santiago Street in the Park Santiago <br />neighborhood. The General Plan land use designation for the site is Low Density <br />Residential (LR) and the zoning district is Single-Family Residential (R1). The site <br />contains a one and a half-story 2,240-square-foot, Tudor Revival style residence and <br />detached garage on a 6,500-square-foot residential lot. The property is known as the <br />Burkett House and is individually listed as No. 718 on the Santa Ana Register of Historical <br />Properties (“Register”). It was placed on the Register in 2021 and was categorized as <br />“Contributive.” <br />The Burkett House is of interest as it is influenced by an unusual example of Tudor Revival <br />featuring clapboard siding. Asymmetrical in design, the house exhibits a front-facing gable <br />with wing roof design of high pitch, with roof eaves of little to no overhang, clad in <br />composition shingle roofing. The prominent front-facing gable is located along the north <br />side and features a massive brick chimney with two chimney pots, extending past the <br />roofline. The entryway is characterized by a non-original full-light wood front door, <br />accessed via a brick front porch walkway.
