SANTA ANA DOG PARK, CITY OF SANTA ANADVD <br />7 <br />UNDERSTANDING OF NEED <br />Centennial Park has a great array of recreational off erings for the <br />Santa Ana Community. Construction of the city’s fi rst dog park at this <br />regional facility will be a great addition to the long list of recreational <br />off erings at this park. <br />Based upon previous city fi ndings the site, the old “fi re training facility” <br />land, is currently the best available site for a dog park in the city. Upon <br />review of the three and half acre vacant lot the DVD design team has <br />a few takeaways and initial ideas about this land and the proposed dog <br />park program: <br />1. The 3.5 acre site is larger than most municipal dog parks. The <br />initial development program should be easily accommodated on <br />this site, including some parking and the children’s play space. <br />2. The existing park’s reservation center blocks easy access to the <br />site from the park proper (eastern edge of the site). If access to/ <br />from the main Centennial Park lands is wanted access across <br />the reservation center parking area or pedestrian access along <br />the lake should be considered. <br />3. The existing park parking lot and the joint-use parking structure <br />to the east of the site would off er extended parking opportunities <br />for events and times of high use. Access routing to the dog park <br />gates and consideration for mobility challenged dog owners must <br />be considered. <br />4. The Castor Street access road is feasible and practical solution. <br />Getting to the access road is somewhat of a circuitous route, <br />however repeat park users will be able to navigate the zig zag <br />route. This access would allow for a dedicated and protected <br />parking lot. Dogs coming and going from the new dog park <br />would not need to interact with Centennial Park patrons that are <br />undertaking other recreational opportunities in the park. <br />5. The concept planning will focus on access and planning of <br />this vacant lot. Parking, a central gathering space, playlot and <br />gateways to the dedicated dog areas can be modeled and the <br />best layouts presented to the public and stakeholders for review <br />and comment. <br />6. Though there would be challenges, an optional access to the <br />Santa Ana River Trail would provide walk and bike to connections <br />to a wide audience. And provide an opportunity to take extended <br />dog walks utilizing the existing trail corridor.
