help students understand and appreciate diversity, teach them to think critically about racial bias and show them <br />how to deal with discriminatory behavior in appropriate ways. <br />ROP course instruction shall promote nonviolent conflict resolution techniques in order to encourage attitudes <br />and behaviors that foster harmonious relations. As part of this effort, students shall be taught the skills necessary <br />to reduce violence, including communication skills, anger management, bias reduction, and mediation skills. <br />Staff shall receive training which implements and supports conflict resolution techniques. <br />Questioning and Apprehension by Law Enforcement Personnel <br />Board Policy 5145.11 <br />Law enforcement officers have the right to interview and question students on school premises. When such an <br />interview is requested, the instructional administrator or designee shall ascertain the officer's identity, official <br />capacity, and the authority under which he/she acts. If the officer needs to interview or question the student <br />immediately, the instructional administrator or designee shall accommodate the process in a way that causes <br />the least possible disruption to the ROP class, gives the student appropriate privacy, and models exemplary <br />cooperation with community law enforcement authorities. <br />Except in cases of child abuse or neglect, the instructional administrator or designee shall notify the <br />parent/guardian of a minor student when a law enforcement officer requests an interview on school premises. <br />At the law officer's discretion and with the student's approval, the instructional administrator or designee may be <br />present during the interview. <br />If the law officer finds it necessary to remove the student from school, the instructional administrator or designee <br />shall first ascertain the reason for such action. Upon releasing a student who is a minor, the instructional <br />administrator or designee shall immediately attempt to inform the student's parent/guardian. <br />Personnel responsible for releasing a student from school custody shall exercise extreme diligence to prevent <br />such release to any unauthorized or unidentifiable person. <br />Release of Directory Information <br />Board Policy 5125.1 <br />The Superintendent or designee may authorize the release of student directory information to representatives of <br />the news media, prospective employers, military, or nonprofit organizations as provided by law. Unless <br />prohibited by the parent/guardian in accordance with law, directory information which ROP officials may disclose <br />consists of the following: student's name, address, telephone number, data and place of birth, major field of <br />study, dates of attendance, certificates and awards received. <br />Safety <br />Board Policy 5142 <br />The Governing Board believes priority should be given to safety and to the prevention of student injury. ROP <br />facilities shall be designed and equipment shall be selected to minimize the risk of harm to students. <br />Staff shall be responsible for the conduct and safety of students during class hours and ROP-sponsored <br />activities. <br />Instructors shall establish class rules consistent with law, Board policy, and administrative regulation for the safe <br />and appropriate use of ROP equipment and materials for student conduct. Instructors shall train students in <br />safety procedures, shall provide ongoing safety instruction as appropriate and shall administer a safety test to <br />each student. Copies of class rules shall be sent to parents/guardians and be readily available at the ROP class <br />at all times. <br />is <br />
