Charge No.8: Violation of Journalistic Freedoms
Hamas is charged with violating freedoms and muzzling the media, Among the policies
pursued by Hamas is the policy of silencing individuals and reducing freedom of the press
in order to polish its image and protect itself from criticism by both both Palestinians and
the international community.
Hamas uses the utmost degree of arbitrariness against journalists, as it does not hesitate to
impose prison sentences on journalists and media professionals who are active in exposing
its corruption or communicating with Israeli peace activists.
Hamas enjoys strict control over the media outlets in Gaza. Freedom House gives Gaza
(0/4) to free and independent media, noting that many journalists and media workers in
Gaza have been subjected to t pattern of arrests and interrogations, and in some cases to
torture and severe beatings. An opinion poll in 2022 showers that 59 percent of Gazans
cannot criticize Hamas freely and without fear.
Hamas also practices a policy Of silencing journalists, by targeting their farnilics.
These actions by Hamas against Palestinian citizens of Gaza are a violation of Islamic laws
that guarantee personal freedoms and protection of Muslim rights.
