CITY OF SANTA ANA, CALIFORNIA <br /> <br />STANDARD SPECIFICATION NUMBER 103. <br /> <br />Asphaltic Concrete Wearing Surface. <br /> <br />(Fine Graded Type) <br /> <br />~'FION r. DESCRIPTION. <br /> Upon a base prepared and constructed as hereinbefore specified shall be lald an <br /> Asphaltic Concrete Wearing Surface of such width and cross-section as shown on the plans, <br /> in accordance with the following specifications. <br /> <br />SECTION 2. THICKNESS. <br /> <br /> The thickness of the wearing surface shall be as shown on the plans and shall be held <br /> to be its minmium thickness after compression. <br /> <br />SECTION ,3. COMPOSITION. <br /> <br /> The asphaltic Concrete Wearing Surface shall be composed of asphalt cement, broken <br /> stone, sand and stone dust as hereinbefore specified, in the following proportions, by weight: <br /> <br /> Per cent <br /> Asphaltic Cement ............................................................................................................................ 7.5 to 9 <br /> Passing a two hundred (200) mesh screen .............................................................................. ? to 12 <br /> Passing a ten (10) mesh screen and retained on a two hundred (200) mesh screen..34 to 60 <br /> Passing a one-quarter (~) inch screen and retained on a ten (10) mesh screen........15 to 30 <br /> Passing a one-half (~) inch screen and retained on a one-quarter (~) inch screen..lO to 25 <br /> O{ the portlo~ passing a ten (10) mesh screen and retained on a two hundred (200) <br /> mesh screen, from 60 to 80 per cent shall pass a forty (40) mesh screen and from 20 to <br /> 40 per cent shall pass an eighty (80) mesh screen. <br /> <br />~CTION 4. MIXING, <br /> (a) The asphalt cement shall be heated in kettles or tanks designed to secure uniform <br /> heating of the entire contents and shall be brought to a temperature of not less than 2~1° <br /> Fahrenheit to not more than ~0° Fahrenheit. <br /> <br /> (b) The coarse and fine aggregate for the asphaltic ~oncrete wearing surface mixture <br /> shall be dried and heated at the paving plant in suitably designed revolving driers. The <br /> mixture shall be heated to a temperature of not less than two hundred fifty (250') degrees <br /> Fahrenheit to not more than three hundred fifty ($~1°) degrees Fahrenheit as determined on <br /> the mixing platform. The temperature shall be taken in the bins. The aggregates may be <br /> simultaneously fed into the same drier, but in that case they shall, immediately after heating, <br /> be screened into at least three ($) dlfferent sizes and stored in separate bins. <br /> <br /> (c) Each batch shall be combined and mixed as follows: <br /> <br /> The coarse and fine aggregates consisting of at least three (3) different sizes shall be <br /> separately and accurately weighed hy means of multiple beam or dlal scales of sufficient <br /> capacity to weigh the entlrc batch to be mixed. The required amount of asphalt cement for <br /> each batch shall he measured by actual welghlng with the scales attached to the asphalt <br /> c~nent bucket. <br /> <br /> The mixture shall be made in an approved twin plug mixer, having at least forty-eight <br /> (48) paddles which shall rotat~c not less than seventy (70) nor more than ninety (~0) revo- <br /> <br /> <br />
