o~r~ih~curb shall be rounded to a radius of approximately one (1) inch, and the back <br />edge, to a radius of not more than one-half (~) inch. Unless otherwise specified, the <br />back edge of the top of all curbs shall be one*fourth (~) inch higher than the front edge. <br />The finished curb shall allow a true straight face, and top of uniform width, free from <br />humps, sags, or inequalities. When a straight edge five (5) feet long is laid upon the top <br />of the curb, it shall not vary more than one-fourth (~) inch from the straight edge, <br />except at curves or grade changes. <br /> <br /> (e) CONSTRUCTION JOINTS. Construction joints shall be made at the ends of all <br />curb returns and at intervals of twenty (20) feet therefrom, unless otherwise noted on the <br />plans. This joint shall be made by setting steel plates in a vertical position at right angles <br />to the curb and withdrawing them after the concrete has been tamped into place. The <br />finishing shall be done to correspond to the scoring lines. <br /> <br /> (f) CONTRACTORS NAME ON CURB. The Contractor shall stamp his name on <br />the curb at intervals of not less than one hundred (100) feet. The letters shall be not <br />less than three-fcurths (~) inch, nor more than one and one--half (1~) inches in height, <br />and impressed to a depth of one-fourth (~) inch. <br /> <br /> (g) CURING. The entire curb shall be banked and covered with not less than two <br />(2) inches of earth or sand, within twenty-four (24) hours after completion. During the <br />next ten (10) days, it shall remain covered and shall be watered twice daily. <br /> <br /> (h) REPAIRS AND REPLACEMENTS. The Contractor shal lrepair all curbs, <br />walks and gutters damaged by him during the construction of curb. Where any curb <br />requires repair before acceptance, the repair shall be made by removln~ and replacing <br />the entire section between scoring lines, and not by refinishing the damaged portion. Where <br />the plans provide for reconstruction of existing curb and the limit of new work specified <br />does not fall on a scoring llne, the entire scctlon shall be removed and the new curb <br />shall join the old curb at the first scoring line beyond said specified limit. <br /> <br />SZCTION :~. CRMZNT 8IDRWALir CONSTRUCTION. <br /> <br /> Cement sidewalk shall be placed upon a thoroughly dampened subgrade, prepared and <br />gaaged as hereinbefore described. <br /> <br /> (a) DIMEN-qlONS. Unless otherwise specified on the plans, ail sidewalks shall be <br />of the following w~dths and total thicknesses: <br /> <br /> Sidewalks on residential streets shall be five (5) feet in width and three and one-haft <br />(;II,{) inches in thickness. <br /> Sidewalks fronting business houses shall l~e the full width between the property llne <br />and thc back face of the curb, and four (4) inches in thickness. <br /> All sidewalks crossing driveways shall be equal in width to the adjoinln~ sidewalks, <br />and five ($) inches in thickness. <br /> The sidewalk shall cover thc entire area included within the prolongation of the side <br />lines of the inters~ctlng streets and the curbs and curb returns at all street intersections, <br />unless otherwise s~ecified or shown on the plans. <br /> (b) SIDEWALK SLOPE. The finished surface of the cement sidewalk shall lie <br />in a ~lane sloping up from the established grade at the curb line at the rate of three (3) <br />inches in twelve (12) feet, unless otherwise specified or shown on the plans. <br /> <br /> (c) FORMS. Strips used as side forms shall be not less than one and three-fourths <br />(1~) inches in thickness nor less than the thickness of the sidewalk, and shall have a <br />smooth straight upper edge. All side forms shall be well staked or otherwise held to the <br />established line and grade, and their upper surface shall conform with the finished surface <br />of the sidewalk <br /> The forms shall be thoroughly cleaned before being used. <br /> <br /> (d) PLACING CONCRETE. Concrete, machine or hand mixed as hereinbefore <br />described, shall be spread upon the subgrade between the side forms and htoroughly <br /> <br />31--6 <br /> <br /> <br />
