Where the curb line does not <br />conform to existing curbs and gutters, or new curbs are to be built, the existing curbs <br />and gutters, shall be removed, unless otherwise specified, and the space filled in with <br />sound earth. AIl subgrade for sidewalks and gutters shall be determined by a guage <br />extend/ng to the full depth of the concrete, and supported by side strips set to a grade. <br />Subgrading for curb or placing of sand cushion on swelling soil shall be done before curb <br />forms have been set. <br /> <br /> SECTION 4. BACKFILLING . <br /> <br /> All matreial removed to facilitate construction shall be replaced to grade. <br /> <br />SECTION 5. SUPERTINTENDENT OF STREETS T OCNECK GRADING. <br /> The Contractor shall notify the Superintendent of Streets when a block or section <br /> has been brough tto sub-grade, whereupon the latter will check the elevation and condition <br /> of the same. If the work is found to be in accordance with the specifications and grade <br /> given, the Contractor shall proceed as hereinafter specified. <br /> <br />Part II. <br />Materials. <br /> <br />SECTION 1. PORTLAND CEMENT. <br /> <br /> (a) SPECIFICATIONS AND TESTS. All Portland Cement shall meet the re- <br /> quirements of the Standard Specifications and Tests for Portland Cement, Serial Desig- <br /> nation C 9-21, approved March 31, 1922, as "American Standard," by the American Engineer- <br /> ing Standards Committee. <br /> <br /> (b) PACKAGES, MARKING AND STORAGE. Tbe cement shall be delivered in <br /> suitable bags or barrels with the brand and name of the manufacturer plainly marked <br /> thereon. A bag of cement shall contain ninety.four (94) pounds net, and will be considered <br /> as equivalent to one (1) cubic foot. A barrel shall contain three hundred seventy-six (376) <br /> POunds net, and will be considered as equivalent to four (4) cubic feet. <br /> <br /> The cement shall be stored in such a manner as to permit easy access for proper <br /> inspection and identification of each shipment, and in a suitable weather-tight building <br /> which will protect the cement from dampness. <br /> <br /> (c) INSPECTION. Every facility shall be provided the Superintendent of Streets <br /> for careful sampling and inspection at either the mill or at the site of the work, as may be <br /> specified by him. When a seven (?) day test is required by the Superintendent of Streets, <br /> at least ten (10) days from the time of sampling shall be allowed for the completion of <br /> the test, and at least thirty-one (31) days shall be allowed for the completion of the twenty- <br /> eight (28) day test. The cement shall be tested in accordance with the methods hereinafter <br /> prescribed . The twenty-eight (28) day test shall be waived only when specifically ordered. <br /> ¢a2 R'~J~:CTZOi,~.
