GRADING AREA. <br /> Unless specified by plan or ordinance thc portion of thc street or alley to be graded <br /> shall be as follows: <br /> <br /> (a)' FOR CURBS AND GUTTERS. When curbs or gutters or both are to be con- <br /> structed, the area to be occupied by the curb or 8utter or both, shall be brought to a sub- <br /> grade, and, unless otherwise specified, the area between the curb line and the sidewalk <br /> shall be graded flush with the tops of the curb and sidewalk. Where no sidewalk exists, the <br /> area between the curb line and the property line shall be graded flush with the top of the <br /> curb and with a rise of one-fourth (~) inch per foot to the property line. <br /> <br /> (b) FOR SIDEWALKS. When sidewalks are to be constructed, the area to be <br /> occupied by the sidewalk shall be brought to a suhgrade and, unless otherwise specified. <br /> the remaining area between the curb lines and property lines shall be graded flush wlth <br /> the sidewalks and the tops of the curbs, or flush with the surface of the sidewalk when <br /> there is no curb. <br /> <br />SECTION 2. ROUGH GRADING. <br /> <br /> Rough grading shall include all fiIlifig and removal of excess earth, stone, trees, old <br /> pavements, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, driveways and any other str~ctures or ohjcctlonabI¢ <br /> materlal found wlthln the limits of the improvements to be made. Any of thc above men <br /> tioned objects or materlal shall be removed, whether or not it is within the limits of the <br /> improvements, when so noted on the plans. <br /> <br /> Plowing or excavating sound material shall be done to a depth not greater than six <br /> (6) inches below the subgrade elevation. <br /> <br /> Excavated material not rcqulrcd for fills shall be removed from the street as soon as <br /> excavated. <br /> <br /> (a) FILLING. Thc space over which fills are to be made shall first be cleared of <br /> all brush, timber, trash or debris. All filling shall be done with good sound earth, sand or <br /> gravel, and no oil cake or other lumpy material, or material of a perishable, spongy, or <br /> otherwise improper nature shall be used in filling. <br /> <br /> Fills shall be made in layers not to exceed four (4) inches in depth before tamping. <br /> Each layer, after being leveled off shall be thoroughly dampened and while moist shall be <br /> tamped until hard and unyielding. <br /> <br /> (b) MUD AND SOFT MATERIAL. When mud or other soft or spongy material <br /> is encountered, it shall be removed and the space filled with gravel or good earth, which <br /> shall be pla_ced in layers as hereinbefore set forth for fills, and thoroughly tamped. The <br /> contractor will not be required in such cases to excavate mud or other soft or spongy <br /> material to a depth greater than two (2) feet below grade~ <br /> <br /> After the rough grading has been completed, as specified hereinbefore, the foundation <br /> shall be brought to subgrade and tamped or rolled until solid.
