CITY OF SANTA ANA, CALIFORNIA <br /> <br />STANDARD SPECIFICATION NUMBER <br /> <br />Grading Construction. <br /> <br />SECTION 1. GRADING AREA. <br /> Unless otherwise specified by plan or ordinance, the portion of the street or alley to <br /> be graded shall be as follows: <br /> FOR PAVEMENT AND OTHER ROADWAY IMPROVEMENT. ~fhere no curbs <br /> or sidewalks exist, the roadway shall be graded from property line to properly llne. Where <br /> curbs do exist or are a part of the improvement, the street shall be graded between curbs. <br /> Where gutters exist or are a part of the improvement, the street shall be graded between <br /> the edges of the gutters. <br /> Where driveways are to be paved, they shall be graded for their full width and from <br /> curb line to the edge of the sidewalk or to the property line where no sidewalk exists, or <br /> where present sidewalk is to be removed. <br /> In all cases where cross streets and alley intersections are to be paved, they shall be <br /> graded to their full width to a point, sul~/iciently beyond the property lines to ~ermit of <br /> grading an approach to the new work; when finished, the gradient of such approach shall <br /> not be more than six (5) per cent. <br /> <br />SECTION 2. ROUOH GRADING. <br /> Rough ~ading shall include all filling and removal o! excess earth, stc~e, trees, old <br /> lmveme~, s/dewalks, curbs, gutters, driveways and any other structures or objectionable <br /> material found within the limits of the improvements to be made. Any of the above men- <br /> tioned objects or material shall be removed, whether or not it is within the l/mits of the <br /> /mpruven~nts, whe~ so noted on the plans. <br /> Plowing or excavating sound material shall be done to a depth not greater than six <br /> (6) /nches below pavement subgrado or the finished grade where no pavement is to be <br /> constructe~L No more than one-half (~)mile in length oI the roadway of any street shall <br /> be plowed up/n advance of the construction of pavement base, except where there are car <br /> tracks on the street, in which case one sid~ shall be held intact until the construction of <br /> pavement base has begun on the other side. On any street where the improvement o! the, <br /> roadway is specified, t~e rough grading in any block shall be completed and the surface <br /> leveled up al~roximateiy to final subgrade or grade before the construction of any cement <br /> work is bequn in such block. Excavated material not required for fills shall be removed <br /> from the street as soon as excavated. <br /> (a) FILLING. The space over which fills are to be made shall first be cleared of all <br /> brush, timber, trash or dobrh. All filling shall be done with good sound earth, s~nd, or <br /> gravci, and no oll cake or other lumpy material, or material of a perishable, spon/py, or <br /> otherwise improlmr nature shall be used in filling. <br /> Fills shall be made in layers not exceeding one (1) foot in depth before rolling. Each <br /> layer, after being q~veled off, shall be thoroughly dampened and while still moist throughout <br /> shall be rolled until hard and unyielding, with a steam or gasoline roller weighing not <br /> less than twelve (12) tons. <br /> Any ~ of & fill that cannot be r.eached with a steam .or ~asoli.n.e.r.oll,er, ?ndt~esas~ <br /> hereinbefore required, shall be placed in layers not exceeding xour t'~) roches ~ m i <br /> dampened, and then compacted with heavy iron tampers or with a hand roller weighingr <br /> Mt less than twenty-five (2.~) pounds per linear inch width of roller; or the material may <br /> be placed in layers nm exceeding four (4) feet in depth and each layer thoroaghly fioodod <br /> with water and barred. <br /> <br /> <br />
