No fill shall be widened by dmnplng Io~e nmterinl over their slopes. V~hen a fill is <br />to be widener, the new material shall be bonded to the old by cutting steps into the existing <br />slope and by placing the layers as specified above. <br /> <br /> Whun special flooding is required, the ~ntractor shall perform the same in accord- <br />ance with the requirements as specified on the plans. <br /> (b) MUD AND SOFT MATERIAL. ~A~hen mud or other soft or spongy material <br />is encountered, it shall be removed and the space filled with gravel or good earth, which <br />shall be placed in layers as hereinbefore set forth for fills, an~ rolled until the surface <br />ceases to move or creep under the roller. The Contractor will not be required in such <br />cases to excavate mud or other soft or spongy material to a depth greater than two (2) <br />feet below grade. V~'henever any area is too wet to pern~t of thorough rolling, the <br />tractor shall wait until the material has dried su~ciently and then complete the rolling. <br /> <br />8~TION 3, SUB-GRADE. <br /> After the rough grading has been completed, thc surface of the street shall be bi, ought <br /> to the required grade and cross-section, and the sub-grade prepared as follows: <br /> (a) FOR PAVEMENTS. After a block or section has been graded to approximate <br /> grade, the surface shall be thoroughly dlsced to a depth of at least six (6) inches and then <br /> thoroughly moistened by a process of alternate sprinkling and dlscing until thc moisture <br /> has penetrated uniformly to a depth of at least six (6) inches. ~*hile it is moist, it shall <br /> be thoroughly rolled until it is hard and unyielding, with a macadam type roller, weighing <br /> not le~s than twelve (12) tons. All depressions made by the rolling, or from other cause, <br /> shall be filled with good earth, and all high places leveled off, after which it shall be lightly <br /> discod and again thoroughly rolled. This process is to be continued until the surface <br /> of the subgrude conforms to the true grade and crors-sectiun, and is smooth and unyielding. <br /> All places that cannot be reached by the roller shall be hand-tamped until it is firm and <br /> hard. <br /> After being refilled, all excavations, pipe trenches, etc., which were more than one (1) <br /> foot in depth below the subgcade elevation, and that cannot be coiled satisfactorily, shall <br /> be hand-tamped until solid. <br /> V~'here the pavemeat to be lald, does not join a curb or ~uttor at the edges, it shall, <br /> after being thoroughly moistened, receive the first rolling before the header boards are set. <br /> Such rolling shall extend at least eighteen (18) inches beyond the header board limits. <br /> All subgrade for pavement shall be ~uaged by a true templet conforming to the cross- <br /> section of the subgrade* Such templet shall be furnished and used by the Contractor and <br /> shall be of such desisn that the end ~2ides will rest on the ~utters or temporary header <br /> boards and permit of dra~ing along the lensth of the roadway. Such templet shall not be <br /> less, in length, than one-half (~) the width of the pavement. <br /> (b) FOR CURBS, SfD]~V~*ALKS, AND GUTTERS. After the rough grading has <br /> been completed, as specified hereinbefore, the foundation shall bo brouaht to enh~"~lde and <br /> tamped or rolled until solid. Vv'here the subgcade is composed of adobe or other swelling <br /> soil, the upper two (2) inches shall be removed and replaced with a sand cushion unless <br /> otherwise specified. Where the curb line does not conform to existh~ curbs and surfers, <br /> or new curbs are to be built, the existing curbs and ~utters shall bo removed, unless other. <br /> wise specified, and the space filled in with sound earth. All subgrade for sidewalks and <br /> gutters shall be determined by a guage extending to the full depth of the couercte, and <br /> supported by side strips set to grade.
