Before any pipe is put into place the trench bottom shall be prepared so that each
pipe shall have a firm and uniform bearing for its entire length. All adjustment to line
and grade must be made by scraping away or filling in the earth under the body of the
pipe, and not by wedging or blocking up the hub.

All pipe, previous to being lowered into the trench, shall be fitted together and matched,
so that when joined in the trench there shall be no shoulders or unevenness along the lower
half of the pipe.

The faces of all spigot ends and of all shoulders in the hubs or sockets must be
true and brought into fair contact, and all lumps and excrescences on said faces shall be
cut away before the pipe is lowered into the trench.

The pipe shall be lald, without break, uphill, from structure to structure, and with
the socket end up grade.

A swab of suitable material of slightly greater diameter than the pipe shall be kept
in the finished sewer and pulled ahead as each third length of pipe is laid, so as to remove
any cement, earth or other material which may have found lodgement therein.

Whenever the work ceases for any reason, the unfinished end of the sewer shall
be securely closed with a tight fitting plug or cover.

SECTION 4. LATERALS.

(a) The term "laterals" or !'house connection sewers" as used in these specifications,
on the plans, profiles, or other drawings, and in the ordinances, are used to designate
branch sewers laid from main sewers to points on the curb or property lines from which
sewer service can be obtained by proper extensions.

Unless otherwise specified the house connections shall be constructed on a straight line
from where they joint the main sewe~', to their upper ends.

The Contractor shall place as many as four (4) inch "Y" branches for house con-
nectlon sewers, as may be designated on the plans. Thc "Y" branches, unless otherwise
specified, shall be inclined upward at an angle not greater than forty-five degrees from a
horizontal line. If so shown on the Plans, 'ap" branches shall be substituted for "Y"
branches. Each "Y" or ,ap,, branch is to be closed at the outer end by a cement or clay
cap made for that purpose . The space in the socket above the cap shall be filled with
wet sand, covered with a thin coating of neat cement mortar.

When so indicated on said Plan and Profile, house connection sewers shall be lald from
the upper end of Y-pipes to the curb line, and the internal diameter of said house connection
sewers shall be four (4) inches. The Y-pipes shall be joined to the lateral sewers by
eighth bends (said eighth bends to be considered a part of the house connection sewer),
unless otherwise shown on the plans.

Ali house connection sewers shall be laid with a gradient of one-fourth (~) inch
per foot from the Y branch to their upper end.

(b) All house connection sewers as shown on the plans to be constructed and
connected to an existing sewer main, shall comply with the above specifications except
that the connection to the sewer main where "Y's" do not exist shall be made by cutting
a hole in the top portion of the main sewer just large enough to insert a standard four
(4) inch eighth bond. Care being used not to leave any of the broken pieces of pipe in
the existing sewer.

The eighth bends shall not extend below the interior surface of the main sewer and
shall be held firmly in place by a heavy collar of cement mortar. These cement mortar
collars shall extend all the way around six (6) and eight (8) inch main sewers and shall
be at least twelve (12) inches wide and two and one-half (2~) inches thick and shall bo at
least four (4) inches thick where the eighth bend enters the main sewer. On larger sewer
mains the ocllar shall extend one-half way around the pipe.
